Baldev Singh Mann
''Baldev Mann'' was a left-wing activist of the Communist Party of India (Marxist–Leninist) New Democracy. He was a state level leader of Kirti Kisan Union and the editor of ''Hirawal Dasta'' a revolutionary journal of the Naxalites. On 26 September 1986 he was killed by terrorists while on his way to his village, Bagga Kalan, in Amritsar district of Punjab. Sonia Mann, daughter of martyred comrade Baldev Singh Mann. Life Baldev Mann was born on 9 July 1952. He was the son of Inder Singh. He lived in the village Bagga Kalan Tehsil Ajnala, Amritsar. He completed his primary education at the village school he matriculated from government high school at Raja Sansi. He then went to Khalsa College, Amritsar, where he had to face detention from the college during the time of 'the Emergency', and graduated in 1983. Amritsar District
Amritsar district is one of the twenty three districts that make up the Indian state of Punjab. Located in the Majha region of Punjab, the city of Amritsar is the headquarters of this district. As of 2011, it is the second most populous district of Punjab (out of 23), after Ludhiana. Jaimal Singh Padda
Jaimal Singh Padda was a poet, communist activist. He was shot dead on 17 March 1988 in Lakhan ka Padda village, Kapurthala district by Khalistan movement extremists. He was filmed reciting his poem Una Mitterandi Yaad Pyari, before his death, by Anand Patwardhan in his documentary Una Mitterandi Yaad Pyari. Earlier Life and Activism Death During Punjab insurgency, Jaimal Padda had been vocal against both the Sikh and the Hindu fundamentalists. He campaigned against both Sikh and Hindu fundamentalists. His slogan was “Naa Hindu Raaj, Naa Khalistan, Raaj Karega Mazdoor Kisaan” (Neither Hindu state, nor Khalistan, we want the working class to rule). Communist Party of India (CPI) is the oldest Marxist–Leninist communist party in India and one of the nine national parties in the country. The CPI was founded in modern-day Kanpur (formerly known as Cawnpore) on 26 December 1925. Teja Singh Swatantar
Teja Singh Sutantar (16 July 1901 − 12 April 1973), also Swatantar, was a national revolutionary of India who fought for the independence of India from the British Empire and for the liberation of Punjab peasantry from the clutches of feudal lords. He was a member of the 5th Lok Sabha from Sangrur constituency as a CPI candidate. He also was Member of Punjab Legislative Assembly from 1937 to 1945 and member of Punjab Legislative Council from 1964 to 1969. He became actively involved in the revolutionary activities during the 1920s when the Ghadar Party was preparing for the second attempt for the overthrow of British government. Sutantar was sent to Turkey in 1924 where he joined the Turkish military academy to attain military knowledge. Pash
Pash (9 September 1950 – 23 March 1988) was the pen name of Avtar Singh Sandhu, one of the major poets in the Punjabi literature of the 1970s. He was killed by extremists on 23 March 1988. His strongly left-wing views were reflected in his poetry. Early life and activism Pash was born as Avtar Singh Sandhu in 1950 in a small village called ''Talwandi Salem'' in Jalandhar district of Punjab, in a middle-class farmers family. His father Sohan Singh Sandhu was a soldier in the Indian army who also composed poetry as a hobby. Pash grew up in the midst of the Naxalite movement, a revolutionary movement waged in Punjab against the landlords, industrialists, traders, etc. who control the means of production. This was in the midst of the Green revolution which had addressed India's problem of famine using high yield crops, but had also unconsciously led to other forms of inequities in Punjab. Nidhan Singh Gudhan
Nidhan Singh Gudhan was a communist activist, a central team member of Communist Party of India (Marxist-Leninist). He was tortured and then hanged by Khalistan movement extremists. At the time of his death, he was leading Kisan Sangharsh Samiti of Ropar district. He was the founding editor of the Journal ''Surkh Rekha''. He also held the president-ship of Punjab Kisan Union. Earlier Life and Activism Death During Punjab insurgency, Khalistan movement extremists kidnapped Nidhan Singh Gudhan. Deepak Dhawan
Deepak Dhawan was the State Committee member of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI(M)) representing Punjab and also Joint Secretary of Khet Mazdoor Union, a mass organisation of CPI(M), which campaigns for the rights of landless agricultural labourers. He was a member of All India Students Federation (AISF) in D.A.V College, Amritsar, and an elected President of Student Council (Progressive Student Front - a united front of SFI and AISF) at Guru Nanak Dev University. Darshan Singh Canadian
Darshan Singh Canadian (born Darshan A. Sangha in 1917, in Langeri, Punjab, India – 25 September 1986) was a Sikh trade union activist and communist organizer in Canada and India. Canada Darshan Singh Canadian immigrated to Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada in 1937. Upon his arrival, his uncle attempted to get him a job at Dominion Sawmills resulting in the uncle being fired and Sangha being hired at five cents less pay an hour. He became active in the Labor-Progressive Party (as the Communist Party of Canada was known). He was one of the founders of the International Woodworkers of America and served as one of the union's organizers as well as its general secretary from 1942 to 1946. He led striking woodworkers on a march on the provincial capital of Victoria in 1946. He fought for the rights of B.C.'s East Indian woodworkers.
