Balbriggan RFC
Balbriggan RFC is an Irish rugby team based at Bowhill, Balrothery just outside of Balbriggan town. They are a junior club and are currently playing in Division 2A of the Leinster League. The club colours are green and white. The club's women's team is currently in the Leinster League Division 2 The current president is Caroline McFadden 2019-2021 and the vice president is Leigh O'Toole 2019-2021. The club also has youths boys and girls teams as well as men's, women's, minis and special needs teams. In 2020 the club finally opened the long anticipated clubhouse. George Thomas Hamlet was a former president of the club who was also president of the IRFU and played rugby for Ireland on 29 occasions. In 1928 Balbriggan won the Leinster Towns Cup defeating Athy. Leinster Rugby
Leinster Rugby ( ga, Rugbaí Laighean) is one of the four professional provincial rugby union teams from the island of Ireland and the most successful Irish team domestically. They compete in the United Rugby Championship and the European Rugby Champions Cup. Leinster play their home games primarily at the RDS Arena, although larger games are played in the Aviva Stadium when the capacity of the RDS is insufficient. Before moving to the RDS in 2005, Leinster's traditional home ground was Donnybrook Stadium, in Dublin 4. George Thomas Hamlet
George Thomas Hamlet (9 April 1881 - 20 October 1959) was an Irish rugby union international. Born in Balbriggan, Hamlet was a forward who played for Old Wesley and earned 30 caps for Ireland from 1902 to 1911, which included a stint as captain. His 30 caps remained an Ireland record until the late 1920s and the most by a player from Fingal for over 100 years. He has the distinction of being the first to lead Ireland in a Test against England at Twickenham and was captain of Ireland's 1911 Five Nations campaign, where they lost only to Wales. Hamlet served as president of the Irish Rugby Football Union in 1926 and 1927. He also co-founded and was president of Balbriggan RFC around this period. Balbriggan (; , IPA: bˠalʲəˈbʲɾʲɪɟiːnʲ is a coastal town in Fingal, in the northern part of County Dublin, Ireland, approximately 34 km from Dublin City. The 2016 census population was 21,722 for Balbriggan and its environs. Etymology According to P. W. Joyce, the name arises from ''Baile Breacain'' ic which literally means "Brecan's Town". Brecan is a common medieval first name and there are several other Brackenstowns in Ireland. There is also a possible link to the local Bracken River, in which case the name could derive from ''breicín,'' meaning "little trout". Many locals, however, have traditionally felt that ''Baile Brigín'' means "Town of the Little Hills", due to the relatively low hills that surround the town.
