Balata Village
Balata village ( ar, بلاطة البلد, lit= Balata al-Balad) is a Palestinian people, Palestinian suburb of Nablus, in the northern West Bank, located east of the city center. Formerly its own village, it was annexed to the municipality of Nablus during Jordanian rule (1948–67).Abujidi, 2014, p 96/ref> The village contains a number of well known sites: Tell Balata (considered to be Biblical Shechem), Jacob's Well and Joseph's Tomb. Balata Camp
Balata Camp ( ar, مخيم بلاطة) is a Palestinian refugee camp established in the northern West Bank in 1950, adjacent to Balata village on the outskirts of the city of Nablus. It is the largest refugee camp in the West Bank. Balata Camp is densely populated with 30,000 residents in an area of 0.25 square kilometers. History In 1950, the UN gave the refugees from the Jaffa area temporary housing. These people initially refused the UN's offers, stating their eagerness to return to their homes. They desired no sense of permanence. After two years, they accepted the offer and settled at Balata. In 1956, the Jaffa refugees desired more permanent housing. After the border with the State of Israel was sealed, the refugees moved into concrete housing that replaced the original tents. Education and culture The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) funds a school in the Balata camp, with approximately 5,000 pupils. Tell Balata ( ar, تل بلاطة) is the site of the remains of an ancient Canaanite and Israelite city, identified since 1913 with the Biblical city of Shechem. It is located in the West Bank. The built-up area of Balata, a Palestinian village and suburb of Nablus, covers about one-third of the tell, and overlooks a vast plain to the east.Pfeiffer, 1966, p. 518. The site is listed by UNESCO as part of the Inventory of Cultural and Natural Heritage Sites of Potential Outstanding Universal Value in the Palestinian Territories. Balata is a town in the commune of Matoury in French Guiana. It is located at the junction of RN1 and RN2, and started as a Haitian shanty town. History Balata is named after the nearby Balata Creek. It is located at the junction of RN1 and RN2 in Matoury. Haitian emigration to French Guiana started in the late 1960s, and accelerated from the late 1980s onwards. At first, they settled among the Haitians already living in Cayenne. Starting in 1995, shanty towns like Balata appeared on the outskirts of the urban area. Many of the settlers either bought or rented the land. By 2005, only a third of the residents were squatting. The favourable position at the junction of two main roads, triggered suburbanisation in the area. Balata Garden
The Balata Garden (french: jardin de Balata, ; 3 hectares) is a private botanical garden located on the Route de Balata about 10 km outside of Fort-de-France, Martinique, French West Indies. It is open daily; an admission fee is charged. History The garden was begun in 1982 by horticulturist Jean-Philippe Thoze and opened to the public in 1986. It is set on former farmland with picturesque views of the Pitons du Carbet. Today the garden contains about 3,000 varieties of tropical plants from around the world, including 300 types of palm trees.
