''Balanopsammia'' is a monotypic genus of corals in the family of tree-leaved corals, Dendrophylliidae. It is represented by a single species, ''Balanopsammia wirtzi'', which occurs in Atlantic waters around the Cape Verde islands of Santiago and Sal.Ocaña, O. & Brito, A., (2013) Balanopsammia wirtzi'', a new genus and species of coral (Anthozoa: Scleractinia: Dendrophylliidae) from the Cape Verde Islands: A comparative study with the Mediterranean ''Cladopsammia rolandi'. Dendrophylliidae is a family of stony corals. Most (but not all) members are azooxanthellate and thus have to capture food with their tentacles instead of relying on photosynthesis to produce their food. Coral
Corals are marine invertebrates within the class Anthozoa of the phylum Cnidaria. They typically form compact colonies of many identical individual polyps. Coral species include the important reef builders that inhabit tropical oceans and secrete calcium carbonate to form a hard skeleton. A coral "group" is a colony of very many genetically identical polyps. Each polyp is a sac-like animal typically only a few millimeters in diameter and a few centimeters in height. Santiago (Portuguese for “ Saint James”) is the largest island of Cape Verde, its most important agricultural centre and home to half the nation's population.
