Baku Suburban Railway
The Baku suburban railway ( az, Bakı şəhərətrafı dəmir yolu) or Absheron Circular line ( az, Abşeron dairəvi xətti) is a commuter rail service which began in 2019, serving the Azerbaijani capital Baku. Background In 2016, Chairman of Azerbaijan Railways Javid Gurbanov confirmed that work was underway on a railway line to Heydar Aliyev International Airport from Baku's main station. In 2018, president Ilham Aliyev announced funding for a suburban rail service for Baku. The 100 million manat project was to include upgrading the existing railway between Baku and Sumqayıt via Biləcəri, as well as bring back into use the disused route connecting the two cities via Sabunçu and Pirşağı. The Baku tramway network was a network of tramways forming part of the public transport system in Baku, now the capital city of Azerbaijan, between 1889 and 2004. History Early tramways The first tramway in Baku was a cable powered line, opened in 1887. It was used for passenger traffic and was later named "Chernogorodskaya" (Russian for "Black city" ). On 7 April (19 April) 1889, a horsecar line was opened. The owner of that line took over the Chernogorodskaya line, and converted it to horsecar operation. Elektrichka (russian: электри́чка, p=əlʲɪˈktrʲitɕkə; uk, електри́чка, elektrychka) is a Soviet and Eastern bloc commuter (regional) mostly suburban electrical multiple unit passenger train. Xırdalan () is a city, municipality and the capital of the Absheron District of Azerbaijan. It has a population of 95,200. Khyrdalan is home of country's biggest brewery ''Baltika Baku'', previously known as Khyrdalan . A monument to Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak was erected in 2007 in the city. Similarly, a statue of Heydar Aliyev was erected in Cairo in 2008. Pirşağı (also, Pirshaga and Pirshagi) is a settlement and municipality 34 km away from the railway station of Baku, Azerbaijan. Located on the northern coast of Absheron, it is in the Sabunchu district of Baku city. It is called Pirshagi (the shah of feasts) because it was initially a settlement where pilgrims gathered. A seaside resort, it is considered one of the most ancient settlements in Absheron. It has a population of 4,826. Main sights Pirshagi is famous for its "gold dust" sandy beaches and its grapes and figs.
