Bakehouse Art Complex
Bakehouse Art Complex is an arts organization in Miami, Florida, United States. Founded in 1985, it comprises studio spaces, art production facilities, galleries, and educational programming. Mission Bakehouse Art Complex is operated as a non-profit organization. The founding mission of Bakehouse is to support local artists by providing low-cost studio space in Miami's urban core. It was influenced by similar complexes Torpedo Factory Art Center in Alexandria, Virginia, and the Art Place in New Orleans. According to co-founder Helene Pancoast, "We felt the time had come for Miami to have a working art facility, a gathering place for visual artists". A secondary goal is to "contribute to the economic and community development of the neighborhood". An art centre or arts center is distinct from an art gallery or art museum. Printmaking
Printmaking is the process of creating artworks by printing, normally on paper, but also on fabric, wood, metal, and other surfaces. "Traditional printmaking" normally covers only the process of creating prints using a hand processed technique, rather than a photographic reproduction of a visual artwork which would be printed using an electronic machine ( a printer); however, there is some cross-over between traditional and digital printmaking, including risograph. Except in the case of monotyping, all printmaking processes have the capacity to produce identical multiples of the same artwork, which is called a print. Aja Monet
Aja Monet (/ adʒa moʊˈneɪ/ Ah-Zjhah Mow-nay), (sometimes stylized in all lowercase), is an American contemporary poet, writer, lyricist and activist based in Los Angeles, California. Early life Monet began writing poetry at age 8, due to her fascination with storytelling and typewriters. She started performing poetry in high school at Baruch College Campus High School in Manhattan. One of her first poetic memories was when she wrote a poem for a class that compelled the teacher, who encouraged Monet to continue writing. Monet competed with a poem for her high school talent show, and won, bringing her teachers to tears. She created the club SABA, Students Acknowledging Black Achievements, and got involved with the organization, Urban Word NYC, who taught Monet that poetry could be a career. Sandra Ramos
Sandra Ramos (born Oct, 1969) is a Cuban contemporary painter, printmaker, collagist, video and installation artist who explores nationality, gender, and identity in her work. She is known for works featuring her character of the Cuban Pioneer girl, who is composed of a self-portrait and an appropriated portion of an old illustration from 1895' L' illustration French magazine. Ramos currently lives in Miami, Florida, and serves as an artist in residence at Bakehouse Art Complex and a contracted exhibition artist at The Foutain Head Art Studios. María Martínez-Cañas
María Martínez-Cañas (born 1960) is a Cuban-born photographer whose work primarily deals with her Cuban heritage and journeys of discovery.Congdon & Kelley, pp. 165–67 Personal life and education Martínez-Cañas was born in 1960 in Cuba, but her family moved to Miami when she was three months old, then Puerto Rico around the age of four. Jude Broughan (born 1976) is an artist and educator, born in Hamilton, New Zealand and now based in Brooklyn, New York.
