Bairabi Dam
Bairabi Dam is a proposed 80 MW dam on the Tlawng river near Bairabi Village in Kolasib district in the state of Mizoram in India. History Bairabi Hydel Project is a 120 MW project initiated by Brig Ṭhenphunga Sailo during Mizoram People's Conference government. National Hydroelectric Power Corporation had started the survey and investigation of Detailed Project Implementation in 1982. NHPC prepared the feasibility reported on the basis of field investigations which were completed in 1982-83. Due to the change in government in 1984, the Congress Government led by Pu Lalthanhawla came to power, Techno-Economic Clearance, Forest & Environment Clearance was pursued but not successful, hence Brahmaputra Board was asked to reinvestigate and prepare a DIPR, who reduced the power project from 120 MW to 80 MW. Bairabi
Bairabi is a census town in Kolasib district in the state of Mizoram, India. It is also the railhead of Mizoram, 117 km from the Capital, Aizawl. Demographics As of the 2011 Census of India, Bairabi had a population of . Males constitute 50.4% of the population and females 49.6%. Bairabi has an average literacy rate of 90.8%. 17.5% of the population is under age of six. Connectivity Bairabi is one of the railhead of Mizoram, connected with a broad gauge line. Katakhal-Bairabi metre gauge track was converted to broad gauge, having got the status of national project, it was fast tracked and completed on 21 March 2016. On completion this will be extended to Sairang. The Bairabi-Sairang (Sihhmui) railway line will cover 40 km within Kolasib district and 11 km within Aizawl district. Tlawng River
The Tlawng is a river of Mizoram, northeastern India. Its tributaries include the Tut River, Tut, Teirei River, Teirei and the Ngashih. The city of Aizawl lies in the Tlawng valley. In 2012, a dam (Tlawng Dam) was proposed for the river. History In 1890, when the British came to Mizoram, Tlawng river was the main means of transportation from Silchar. Sairang on the river banks of Tlawng is the nearest town from Aizawl which is about 14 kilometers. Kolasib District
Kolasib district is one of the eleven districts of Mizoram state in India. It is the smallest district in Mizoram with an area of 1,386 km2(535 sq mi). Mizoram
Mizoram () is a state in Northeast India, with Aizawl as its seat of government and capital city. Ṭhenphunga Sailo
Ṭhenphunga Sailo (1 January 1922 – 27 March 2015) was a Brigadier of the Indian Army, and the second and twice the Chief Minister of Mizoram, a state in northeast India. He was the creator of Mizoram People's Conference, one of the major political parties in Mizoram. He was a recipient of Ati Vishisht Seva Medal (AVSM) and Padma Shri for his humanitarian works during his military service, and Mizo Award for his lifetime achievements. T. Sailo was the son of Vanchheuva, a Mizo chief of Ṭhuampui village at Lunglei district. He studied at Serkawn Middle English School, Shillong High School (in Meghalaya), and Serampore College in Calcutta (now Kolkata). Mizoram People's Conference
The Mizoram People's Conference was a regional political party in Mizoram, India. It was formed by Brig Thenphunga Sailo on 17 April 1975. Ṭhenphunga was the party chairman and Chief Minister of Mizoram from 1979 to 1984, and an army officer and then a human rights activist before starting his political party. Following the MPC's defeat in 1984, it was the main opposition party for the next two decades. In the 1998 assembly elections, it won 12 seats. However, in the 2003 elections, the party won only three seats, a number which fell to two in the 2008 elections and one in 2013. It ultimately won four seats in the 2018 election and their MLA quit to join ZPM. Lal Thanhawla (born 19 May 1938 or 1942) is an Indian politician and former Chief Minister of Mizoram, belonging to the Indian National Congress party. He holds the record for longest-serving Chief Minister of Mizoram, occupying the position for five terms: 1984 to 1986, 1989 to 1993, 1993 to 1998, 2008 to 2013, and 2013 to 2018. He served as President of the Mizoram Pradesh Congress Committee from 1973 to 2021. His electoral constituencies were Serchhip and Hrangturzo from where he successfully contested the Mizoram Legislative Assembly elections nine times, in 1978, 1979, 1984, 1987, 1989, 1993, 2003, 2008, and 2013. Mizo National Front
The Mizo National Front ( MNF) is a regional political party in Mizoram, India. MNF emerged from the Mizo National Famine Front, which was formed by Pu Laldenga to protest against the inaction of the Indian central government towards the famine situation in the Mizo areas of the Assam state in 1959. It staged a major uprising in 1966, followed by years of underground activities. In 1986, it signed the Mizoram Accord with the Government of India, renouncing secession and violence. The MNF then began contesting elections and has formed state government in Mizoram three times. Pu Zoramthanga
Zoramthanga (born 13 July 1944) is an Indian politician who is the Chief Minister of Mizoram. He is the president of Mizo National Front (MNF) party. He had served as the Chief Minister of Mizoram from December 1998 to December 2008, for two consecutive terms. He was second-in-command to Laldenga during the secession movement of Mizo National Front, and became the successor as the party leader, after MNF was a recognised political party, following the death of Laldenga in 1990. He joined the Mizoram Legislative Assembly as Minister of Finance and Education in 1987. His party lost the 2008 Assembly elections to the Indian National Congress.
