Bain's Cape Mountain Whisky
Bain's Cape Mountain is a South African brand of whisky distilled at the James Sedgwick distillery in Wellington, Western Cape (Drakenstein Local Municipality). Launched in 2009, Bain's is South Africa's first whisky produced from a single grain, being made from 100% South African-grown yellow maize (corn). Bain's is owned by Distell, a multinational brewing and beverage company based in Stellenbosch, South Africa. Bain's is named after Andrew Geddes Bain, who built the Bainskloof Pass that connects the town of Wellington, where the distillery is located, to the interior of the country in 1853. Wellington, Western Cape
Wellington is a town in the Western Cape Winelands, a 45-minute drive from Cape Town, in South Africa with a population of approximately 62,000. Wellington's economy is centered on products of agriculture such as deciduous fruit, table grapes, wine and brandy. Drakenstein Municipality (; ) is a local municipality located within the Cape Winelands District Municipality, in the Western Cape province of South Africa. , it had a population of 251,262. Andrew Geddes Bain
Andrew Geddes Bain (baptised 11 June 1797 – 20 October 1864), was a Cape Colony geologist, road engineer, palaeontologist and explorer. Life history The only child of Alexander Bain and Jean Geddes, both of whom died when Bain was still a young boy, Bain was baptised 11 June 1797 in Thurso, Scotland. He was raised by an aunt who lived near Edinburgh. Here he received a classical education, but no vocational training. In 1816 he emigrated to Cape Town accompanied by his uncle Lieutenant Colonel William Geddes of the 83rd Regiment, who was stationed in the Cape. He married Maria Elizabeth von Backstrom on 16 November 1818 and had 3 sons and 7 daughters. In 1822 he bought property in Graaff Reinet and carried on for some years the business of a saddler. Bainskloof Pass
Bainskloof Pass () is a mountain pass on the R301 regional road between Wellington and Ceres in the Western Cape province of South Africa. The 18-kilometer (11-mile) pass, opened in 1854, was constructed by road engineer Andrew Geddes Bain with the use of convict labour. Originally built for horse-drawn traffic, the pass was later tarred. The pass reaches at its highest point. Here, the road joins the Witte River, which descends the northern side of the mountains through a precipitous cleft to a stretch of rapids, waterfalls and natural pools. Bainskloof Pass is now a national monument. After roadworks starting in 2018, it finally reopened to the public in June 2022. Andrew Watts (cricketer)
Andrew Watts (born 4 October 1960) is a former English cricketer who played first-class cricket for Derbyshire in 1982 and 1983 and for Boland in South Africa from 1985 to 1987. Watts was born at Chapeltown, Yorkshire and grew up in Penistone and started playing for Derbyshire in the second XI and for the under 25s in 1980. He made his first team debut in the 1982 season against Hampshire. He played two first team games in the 1983 season, the remainder being in the second XI. After playing one game for the second eleven in 1984, Watts went to South Africa where he played for Boland in first-class matches and in the one-day game. Grain whisky normally refers to any whisky made, at least in part, from grains other than malted barley. Frequently used grains include maize, wheat, and rye.
