Origin of the village name The name of this village is given in the Manasamangal Kāvya. When the daughter-in-law of Chand Soudagar, Behula, was taking her dead husband, Lakhindar, in a boat; the doctors of the village attempted to cure Lakhindar, but they failed. The doctors were called 'Baidya' in the local language, so the village was named Baidyapur. Geography The village is 12 meters above sea level. It has a post office, but the local police station is in Kalna. The village consists of several areas, including Rathtala, Rastala, Gholar Par and Nandipara. Manasamangal Kāvya
Manasamangal Kāvya ( bn, মনসামঙ্গল কাব্য) is the oldest of the Mangal-Kāvya and narrates how the snake-goddess Manasa established her worship in Bengal by converting a worshipper of Shiva to her own worship. It is believed she came to Bengal with the Dravidians who worshipped her in the hope that she would protect them against snakes. Manasa is also known as Bisahari, Janguli and Padmavati. Story The story of Manasamangal begins with the conflict of the merchant Chandradhar or Chand Sadagar with Manasa and ends with Chandradhar becoming an ardent devotee of Manasa. Monteswar is a village situated in Manteswar CD block in Kalna subdivision of Purba Bardhaman district in the Indian state of West Bengal. History Most of the area between the Damodar and the Ajay, largely covering the later day Shergarh, Selimpur and Senpahari parganas, was broadly known as Gopbhum, where the Sadgop kings ruled for a long time, prior to the advent of the Muslims. They ruled from Amrargar and branched out to Bharatpur (on the bank of the Damodar) and Kanksa. The Sura kings occupy a somewhat mythical position in the region.
