The Syrian Desert ( ar, بادية الشام ''Bādiyat Ash-Shām''), also known as the North Arabian Desert, the Jordanian steppe, or the Badiya, is a region of desert, semi-desert and steppe covering of the Middle East, including parts of southern Syria, eastern Jordan, northern Saudi Arabia, and western Iraq. It accounts for 85% of the land area of Jordan and 55% of Syria. To the south it borders and merges into the Arabian Desert. The land is open, rocky or gravelly desert pavement, cut with occasional wadis. Location and name The desert is bounded by the Orontes Valley and the volcanic field of Harrat al-Shamah to the west, and by the Euphrates to the east. In the north, the desert gives way to the more fertile areas and to the south it runs into the deserts of the Arabian Peninsula. Badia Spices is an American manufacturer of spices and herbs that began in 1967. The spices are manufactured in Doral, Florida, where the company was founded and maintains its headquarters. History The company was started by José Badía, a Cuban exile who fled the island nation in the 1960s. Though he had a hardware business in Cuba, in the U.S. he started the spice business in a small shop in the Little Havana neighborhood of Miami. In 1970, José hired his son, Joseph "Pepe", to manage daily operations, and Pepe is now the majority owner and president of Badia Spices, Inc. In November 2018, Gel Spice Co. was ordered to pay $564,000 to Badia Spices for trademark fringement. Today, Badia Spices sells over 400 products, including raw spices and herbs, blended spices, and dried chili peppers, throughout the United States and more than 70 other countries. ''Badia rugosa'' is species of Senegalese palp-footed spiders (family Palpimanidae). It is the only species in the monotypic genus ''Badia''. The species and genus were first described by Carl Friedrich Roewer in 1961. It is only found in Senegal. Rosa Badia
Rosa María Badia Sala (born 1966) is a Spanish computer scientist specializing in parallel computing, supercomputing, superscalar processing, and multi-core processing. She is a researcher of the Spanish National Research Council, affiliated with the Barcelona Supercomputing Center, where she is the manager of the workflows and distributed computing group. Education and career Badia earned a degree in computer science from the Polytechnic University of Catalonia (UPC) in 1989, and continued at UPC for a Ph.D., which she completed in 1994, under the direction of Jordi Cortadella. She worked at UPC as a lecturer in computer architecture from 1989 to 1997, and then as an associate professor from 1997 to 2008. Badia's early work concerned electronic design automation. While working at UPC, she became a researcher at the European Center of Parallelism of Barcelona (CEPBA) beginning in 1999, through which her interests shifted to parallel computing.
