Badderen
Badderen ( fkv, Paattari) is a village in the municipality of Kvænangen in Troms og Finnmark county, Norway. It lies at the head of the Badderfjord, about south of the municipal seat of Burfjord. European route E6 passes through the village. The basic statistical unit (''grunnkrets'') of Badderen, which also includes the hamlet of Undereidet, had a population of 183 in 2015. History As early as 1743 there were reports of copper ore found in Kvænangen, but further investigations were not carried out until 1827 by the Quenangen Mining Association. One of the stakeholders in this company was the Englishman John Rice Crowe, who already ran the Alten Copper Works (later the Kåfjord Copper Works) in Alta together with Henry Dick Woodfall. Surveys of the ore deposits in Kvænangen continued for several years, and full mining in Kvænangen started in 1840, beginning with Kjækan. Badderfjord
The or is a small fjord that branches off of the main Kvænangen fjord in Kvænangen Municipality in Troms og Finnmark county, Norway. The fjord is long and wide and it extends from its mouth between Steinnes and Nordnes eastward to the head of the fjord at the village of Badderen, which the fjord is named after. Other settlements along the fjord include Undereidet on the north side and Sekkemo on the south side. Sulitjelma Hotel
The Sulitjelma Hotel ( no, Sulitjelma Hotell) is a hotel located near the mines in Sulitjelma in the municipality of Fauske in Nordland county, Norway. Quenangen Mining Association
The Quenangen Mining Association was an English industry that operated copper mines in Kvænangen in the 1800s. Background Around 1826, the Englishmen John Rice Crowe and Henry Dick Woodfall started a company to extract copper ore in Alta. This company was named the Alten Copper Works and was later renamed the Kåfjord Copper Works (''Kåfjord kobberverk''). John Rice Crowe (1795–1877) had started trading in Hammerfest around 1820. On May 17, 1827 the reindeer herder Maret Aslaksdatter signed a contract whereby she transferred the right to exploit the copper ore deposits found at Kåfjord to John Rice Crowe. As payment, she received 50 ''våger'' (about ) of whole-grain rye flour. European Route E6
European route E6 ( no, Europavei 6, sv, Europaväg 6, or simply E6) is the main north-south thoroughfare through Norway as well as the west coast of Sweden. It is long and runs from the southern tip of Sweden at Trelleborg, into Norway and through almost all of the country north to the Arctic Circle and Nordkapp. The route ends in Kirkenes close to the Russian border. Sulitjelma
, , or is a village in the municipality of Fauske in Nordland county, Norway. Sulitjelma is situated in a lush inland valley at an elevation of above mean sea level, above sea level. It is located on the shore of Langvatnet (Fauske), Langvatnet lake, about southeast of the Fauske (town), town of Fauske. Sulitjelma Mines
Sulitjelma Mines ( no, Sulitjelma gruber) was a Norwegian mining company that extracted copper, pyrite, and zinc at Sulitjelma in the municipality of Fauske, Norway. Operations started with a test mine in 1887. From 1891 to 1933, the business was registered as a Swedish company called ''Sulitelma Aktiebolags Gruber''. From 1933 to 1983, it was registered as a Norwegian company called ''A/S Sulitjelma Gruber'', and from 1983 until it was shut down in 1991 the company was state-owned and was named ''Sulitjelma Bergverk AS''. Chalcopyrite was found by the Sami Mons Andreas Petersen around 1858, but due to the very remote location of the place there was skepticism that the deposits could be commercially viable. Henry Dick Woodfall
Henry Dick Woodfall (1796 – April 13, 1869) was an English businessman. Together with John Rice Crowe, he founded Alten Copper Works in Kåfjord, Norway, later renamed the Kåfjord Copper Works. Henry Woodfall was born in Scotland in 1796, the son of the printer George Woodfall, whose business he inherited. After relocating to Norway, he had a relationship with a local woman, Ane Helene Johannesdotter Muotka, and their son Salamon Woodfall was born in 1831. As director of Alten Copper Works, Woodfall was skeptical of bringing labor from England because he believed that the work was better served by building up a permanent mining community with Norwegian workers. He was also concerned that the mining company should take care of the miners and their families, and together with Crowe he founded Kåfjord as a society with a number of welfare services for the growing local population. John Rice Crowe
Sir John Rice Crowe (November 20, 1795 – January 10, 1877) was an English businessman and diplomat who spent much of his life in Norway. He was the British consul-general in Norway, residing in Christiania, from 1843. Together with Henry Dick Woodfall, John Rice Crowe started the company Alten Copper Works in Alta, Norway, Alta around 1826. This company was later renamed the Kåfjord Copper Works. Diplomat After serving for six years as a British diplomat in Russia, Crowe became the deputy Consul (representative), vice-consul in Hammerfest in 1824. Thirteen years later, in 1837, he was appointed British consul in Finnmark, with the requirement to live in Hammerfest.
