Bacon Rind
Bacon Rind (Wah-she-hah; ''translation'' Star-That-Travels; ca. 1860 โ March 28, 1932) was an Osage politician who served as Principal Chief of the Osage Nation between 1912 and 1913. He also served on the assistant chief between 1904 and 1905 and served on the tribal council. Early life Bacon Rind was born in Kansas Territory around 1860 and was relocated with the Osage Nation to present-day Osage County, Oklahoma in the 1870s. Political career Rind was a member of the Progressive Party in the Osage Nation, favored allotment, and supported the development of oil on the reservation. However, he maintained traditionalist custom and dress and was a gifted orator in the Osage language. He served as a member of the Osage Nation Tribal Council and as the assistant principal chief from 1904-1905. Osage Nation
The Osage Nation ( ) ( Osage: ๐๐ป ๐๐ผ๐ฐ๐๐ผ๐ฐอ ('), "People of the Middle Waters") is a Midwestern Native American tribe of the Great Plains. The tribe developed in the Ohio and Mississippi river valleys around 700 BC along with other groups of its language family. They migrated west after the 17th century, settling near the confluence of the Missouri and Mississippi rivers, as a result of Iroquois invading the Ohio Valley in a search for new hunting grounds. The term "Osage" is a French version of the tribe's name, which can be roughly translated as "calm water". The Osage people refer to themselves in their indigenous Dhegihan Siouan language as ๐๐ฐ๐๐ฐ๐๐ท ('), or "Mid-waters". Fred Lookout
Fred Lookout (ca. 1861 โ 1949) was an Osage Nation politician who served several terms as the principal chief of the nation. Lookout served as principal chief three times: 1913โ1914, 1916โ1918, and from 1924 until his death in 1949. Born near Independence, Kansas in Osage territory, he attended the Carlisle Indian Industrial School and was removed with his tribe to present-day Osage County, Oklahoma. He became active in tribal politics in the 1900s, serving as the assistant chief of the Osage Nation between 1908 and 1910 and on the Osage Nation tribal council between 1920 and 1922. The Territory of Kansas was an organized incorporated territory of the United States that existed from May 30, 1854, until January 29, 1861, when the eastern portion of the territory was admitted to the Union as the free state of Kansas. Osage County is the largest county by area in the U.S. state of Oklahoma. Created in 1907 when Oklahoma was admitted as a state, the county is named for and is home to the federally recognized Osage Nation. Osage Language
Osage (; Osage: ''Waลพรกลพe ie'') is a Siouan language that is spoken by the Osage people of Oklahoma. Their original territory was in present-day Missouri and Kansas but they were gradually pushed west by European-American pressure and treaties. Osage has an inventory of sounds very similar to that of Dakota, also a Siouan language, plus vowel length, preaspirated obstruents and an interdental fricative (like "th" in English "then"). In contrast to Dakota, phonemically aspirated obstruents appear phonetically as affricates, and the high back vowel *u has been fronted to .
