Baby Phat (song)
"Baby Phat" is the only official single from De La Soul's sixth studio album, '' AOI: Bionix'', released in late 2001. The song was produced by Dave West and featured vocals from Devin the Dude and Yummy Bingham. This single was the introduction for Yummy Bingham. The song is an ode to "plus size" women, as Devin sings ''"Don't get stuck on the things they say, now you know it's a nasty world / Tryin' to get with ya anyway cause I know you're a nasty girl / We ain't never gon' discriminate so let me compliment your size"'' The B-side of the 12" single is "Watch Out", also produced by Dave West and featuring samples from "Mood for Milt", and "Cubano Chant" by Latin musician Cal Tjader. The single was released as a 12" vinyl single in the United States on November 6, 2001. The CD single is a UK edition, released on February 18, 2002, and reached number 55 in UK Singles chart. De La Soul
De La Soul () is an American hip hop trio formed in 1988 in the Amityville area of Long Island, New York. They are best known for their eclectic sampling, quirky lyrics, and their contributions to the evolution of the jazz rap and alternative hip hop subgenres. The members are Posdnuos, Trugoy, and Maseo. The three formed the group in high school and caught the attention of producer Prince Paul with a demo tape of the song "Plug Tunin'". With its playful wordplay, innovative sampling, and witty skits, the band's debut album, '' 3 Feet High and Rising'', has been called "a hip hop masterpiece." Cal Tjader
Callen Radcliffe Tjader Jr. ( ; July 16, 1925 – May 5, 1982) was an American Latin Jazz musician, known as the most successful non-Latino Latin musician. He explored other jazz idioms, even as he continued to perform music of Afro-Jazz, the Caribbean, México and Latin America. Cal Tjader played the vibraphone primarily, but was accomplished on the drums, bongos, congas, timpani, and the piano. He worked with many musicians from several cultures. He is often linked to the development of Latin rock and acid jazz. Although fusing Jazz with Latin music is often categorized as "Latin Jazz", Tjader's works swung freely between both styles. Devin Copeland (born June 4, 1970), better known by his stage name Devin the Dude, is an American rapper from Houston, Texas. He is known for his unique rapping style and his 2002 songs "Lacville '79" and "Doobie Ashtray". Early life Devin Copeland was born in Pontiac, Michigan on June 4, 1970. He spent most of his early childhood in St. Petersburg, Florida and moved to Houston, Texas while in the fourth grade. He spent the rest of his youth moving back and forth between New Boston and Houston, finally settling in Houston after graduating from high school. He smoked marijuana for the first time at a skating rink in seventh grade; marijuana would later become a major influence on his music. The A-side and B-side are the two sides of phonograph records and cassettes; these terms have often been printed on the labels of two-sided music recordings.
