Alice Baber
Alice Baber (August 22, 1928 – October 2, 1982) was an American abstract expressionist painter who worked in oil and watercolor. She was educated in the United States and in the 1950s and 1960s she studied and lived in Paris. She also traveled around the world. Baber, a feminist, organized exhibits of women artists' work. Early life Baber was born in Charleston, Illinois. She grew up in Kansas, Illinois and Miami, Florida. Her family traveled south to Florida in the winters at a doctor's suggestion because of Alice's poor health, starting around the age of two. She was interested in becoming an artist from an early age. Baber remembers that around age five she decided she would either be a "poet or painter." At age eight, she was formally studying drawing and by age twelve became "so advanced she was enrolled in a college-level class." Sir John Baber, M.D. (18 April 1625 – 1704), was an English physician to Charles II, often employed by the king to negotiate with puritans and other non-conformists on account of his sympathies with them. Life and work Baber was the son of John Baber, recorder of Wells, Somersetshire, and was born on 18 April 1625. He was educated at Westminster school, London, then became a student at Christ Church, Oxford, in 1642. He graduated as a Bachelor of medicine on 3 December 1646, being admitted by virtue of the letters of Colonel John Lambert, governor of the garrison of Oxford. He travelled abroad, studying medicine at Leyden, in the Netherlands, and on 10 November 1648 took the degree of M.D. at Angers. John Baber (1593–1644) was an English lawyer and politician who sat in the House of Commons between 1628 and 1640. Baber was the son of John Baber DD of Tormarton, Gloucestershire. He matriculated at Lincoln College, Oxford on 15 April 1608, aged 15 and was awarded BA on 22 May 1611. He was called to the bar at Lincoln's Inn in 1621 and became recorder of Wells. In 1628, Baber was elected Member of Parliament for Wells and sat until 1629 when King Charles decided to rule without parliament for eleven years. Baber became a bencher in 1639. Gareth Baber (born 23 May 1972) is a Welsh former rugby player and now a rugby union coach. He is best known for coaching and leading the Fiji sevens team to win their second gold medal in rugby sevens at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. He coached Fiji to their fourth World Sevens Series title.
