BV Den Helder, also known as Den Helder Suns, is a Dutch women's basketball club based in Den Helder. Established in 1983, it plays in the Women's Basketball League (WBL). The club has won sixteen national championships. History The club was founded in 1983. Before, there was a team as part of BV Noordkop, however the ladies team decided to establish a separate club to further its ambitions. Since then, the team has played in the Dames Eredivisie. Since the 2021–22 season, the team plays as Den Helder Suns, adopting the same name as the men's professional team from Den Helder. The organisations stayed separated from each other. Women's Basketball League (Netherlands)
The Women's Basketball League (WBL) is the highest level of women's basketball in the Netherlands. The first season was played in 1949. Blue Stars Diemen, Blue Stars is the record titleholder of the league with 20 championships. As of 2021, the league consists of nine teams. History From its establishment, the league was known as "Eredivisie". In 2019, the league name was changed from Vrouwen Basketball League (VBL) to Women's Basketball League (WBL). The 2019–20 season was cancelled prematurely because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the first time the competition was not played out. Den Helder () is a municipality and a city in the Netherlands, in the province of North Holland. Den Helder occupies the northernmost point of the North Holland peninsula. It is home to the country's main naval base. From here the Royal TESO ferryboat service operates the transportation link between Den Helder and the nearby Dutch Wadden island of Texel to the north. Etymology Before the year 1928 the official name of Den Helder was Helder. The origin of the name Helder is not entirely clear. The name Helder may have come from ''Helle/Helde'', which means "hill" or "hilly grounds", or from ''Helre'', which means a sandy ridge. The Den Helder Suns are a professional basketball club based in Den Helder, Netherlands. The club was founded in 2016 and currently plays in the BNXT League. The team has played at the highest domestic level since years. The Suns play their home games in the Sporthal Sportlaan, which has a capacity of 1,000 people. History After the bankruptcy of the Netherlands' professional BV Den Helder team during the 2013–14 season, a professional basketball representative team from Den Helder was missing for three seasons. Alda Leif Jónsdóttir
Alda Leif Jónsdóttir (born 18 April 1979) is an Icelandic former basketball player. She has won the Icelandic championship four times and the Dutch championship once. Alda was a seven-time selection for the Úrvalsdeild Domestic All-First Team and was named the Úrvalsdeild Domestic Player of the Year in 2002. Club career During the 1999–2000 season, Alda led the Úrvalsdeild in assists, blocks, steals, shooting percent and free throw percent. She spent the following season with Holbæk in the Dameligaen, averaging 11 points, 6 rebounds, 4 assists and 3,5 steals per game. In 2005, Alda signed with BV Den Helder (women) of the Dutch Women's Basketball League (WBL). She was named to the 2006 Dutch All-Star game and helped Den Helder to the Dutch championship.
