BUIHA
The British Universities Ice Hockey Association was founded in spring term 2003 by a group of hockey players from the universities of Oxford, London, Nottingham and Newcastle. History of the BUIHA The British Universities Ice Hockey Association, or BUIHA, was formed in response to the growing number of universities with ice hockey programmes in an effort to provide students with competitive ice hockey whilst at university, no matter what their level of play. The notion to form the BUIHA first arose in Easter 2003. The idea was to simply form a divisional competition for the existing university teams. Development over the summer of 2003 led to a committee being put in place, a schedule being set and a number of teams signed up to take part in the first ever BUIHA University Cup. Newcastle Wildcats
The Newcastle Wildcats are a university ice hockey team representing Newcastle University in the United Kingdom. NUIHC are a member club of the British Universities Ice Hockey Association (BUIHA) and ice three teams across all three tiers of UK university competition. The club is notable for now being the 3rd oldest amongst modern British university ice hockey programmes (having been founded in 1994) and for the fact that it was the first to introduce mixed gender participation into a full-contact university sport. The Wildcats operate a successful beginners' training programme to develop new players. Partially as a result of this, Newcastle University was the most represented institution in terms of player registration within the BUIHA for three seasons with the Wildcats preferring to ice teams consisting almost totally of Newcastle students and mostly shunning the popular practice of pooling players from the maximum possible number of institutions. Cardiff Redhawks
The Cardiff Redhawks are a Welsh ice hockey team that play in the First and Third Divisions of the British Universities Ice Hockey Association, formed in 2004. They play their home games at Viola Arena, Cardiff, Wales. Introduction The Cardiff Redhawks were formed in 2004 by a handful of students from Cardiff University, many of whom had never played before. Their first game was against a local team, the Cardiff Titans, on 7 May 2005 following an NHL exhibition game. The squad began to grow by bringing in players from neighbouring universities such as UWIC, Glamorgan, Swansea and Newport. The Redhawks 1st team has traditionally played in BUIHA Division 1 but after a tough season in 2013/14, were relegated to Division 2 in order to partake in more competitive games. Universities Of London Dragons
The University of London Dragons, formerly known as the University of London Union Purples, are a British student ice hockey team based in London, England. They compete in three divisions under the British Universities Ice Hockey Association. Dragons are the most successful student ice hockey team in the history of British university ice hockey. Dragons A have won the Division 1 playoff final (or SuperFinal) in 2008, 2011, 2013, 2015 and 2017 and the Tier 1 Nationals tournament in 2003, 2005, 2008 and 2012. Dragons B have also been performing increasingly better in recent years and the development squad, Dragons C, was the runner-up in the Tier 5 Nationals Tournament of 2018. Sheffield Bears
The Sheffield Bears are a university ice hockey club from Sheffield, England who have teams in BUIHA northern divisions 1, 2, 3, and 5. They were formed in 2004 and play their home games at iceSheffield. The team's leading sponsor is The AMRC with Boeing. The club are also sponsored by Windows 8, Roland Smith Orthodontics, Walkabout, and Sheffield Parties. The Bears are currently Division 2 Southern Conference Play-Off Champions, National Play-Off Runners-up, and Division 1 National Champions. The Bears, like several other member clubs of the BUIHA, are made up of students, 1st year alumni, and staff from more than one higher education establishment. Cambridge University Ice Hockey Club at the University of Cambridge, Cambridge, England, is one of the oldest ice hockey teams in the world. While the team claims a history dating back to 1885, the first strong evidence for their existence comes on 16 March 1900, when they played Oxford University Ice Hockey Club in the first Ice Hockey Varsity Match, at Princes Skating Club in London, losing 7–6. This match was played, on Oxford's insistence, with bandy sticks and a lacrosse ball. The Cambridge team was led by J. J. Cawthra, who later played for England.
