BRP Banahaw (1908)
BRP ''Banahaw'' (ex-''Casiana'', ex-''Casandra'') was a British-built yacht that later served as the presidential yacht of the Commonwealth of the Philippines. History She was launched in on 19 February 1908 at the Greenock shipyard of Scotts Shipbuilding and Engineering Company (John & Robert Scott) for the benefit of R. A. Rainy of New York. She was christened ''Casandra''. She was purchased by the American oil tycoon Edward L. Doheny who renamed her ''Casiana'' after his first oil well in Mexico, ''Casiana No. 7''. In 1936, she was purchased by the Commonwealth of the Philippines for $50,000 and arrived in the Philippines on 25 November 1936. She was officially assigned to the Coast Guard although was primarily used as a presidential yacht. Navotas
Navotas, officially the City of Navotas ( fil, Lungsod ng Navotas), is a 1st class highly urbanized city in the National Capital Region of the Philippines. According to the 2020 census, it has a population of 247,543 people. It is known as the ''Commercial Fishing Hub of the Philippines'', for the city has the third largest fish port in Asia and the largest in Southeast Asia. Although it was established on December 20, 1827, Navotas celebrates its foundation day every January 16, the day in 1906 when it finally separated from Malabon. Navotas became a highly urbanized city on June 24, 2007. Etymology The entire region of Navotas was once part of Malabon. The Battle of Corregidor (; ), fought on May 5–6, 1942, was the culmination of the Japanese campaign for the conquest of the Commonwealth of the Philippines during World War II. The fall of Bataan on April 9, 1942, ended all organized opposition by the U.S. Army Forces Far East to the invading Japanese forces on Luzon, in the northern Philippines. The island bastion of Corregidor, with its network of tunnels and formidable array of defensive armaments, along with the fortifications across the entrance to Manila Bay, was the remaining obstacle to the 14th Japanese Imperial Army of Lieutenant General Masaharu Homma. Naval Station Pascual Ledesma, also known as Cavite Naval Base or Cavite Navy Yard, is a military installation of the Philippine Navy in Cavite City. In the 1940s and '50s, it was called Philippine Navy Operating Base. The naval base is located at the easternmost end of Cavite Point in the San Roque district (specifically Fort San Felipe) of the city. USS ''Canopus'' (AS-9) was a submarine tender in the United States Navy, named for the star Canopus. ''Canopus'' was launched in 1919 by New York Shipbuilding Company, Camden, New Jersey, as the passenger liner SS ''Santa Leonora'' for W. R. Grace and Company, but taken over by the U.S. Navy upon completion in July 1919 and commissioned as USS ''Santa Leonora''. Motor Torpedo Boat Squadron Three (MTBRon 3) was a United States Navy squadron based at Cavite, Philippines, from September 1941 to mid-April 1942. It was commanded by Lieutenant John D. Open City
In war, an open city is a settlement which has announced it has abandoned all defensive efforts, generally in the event of the imminent capture of the city to avoid destruction. Once a city has declared itself open the opposing military will be expected under international law to peacefully occupy the city rather than destroy it. According to the Protocol I of the Geneva Conventions, it is forbidden for the attacking party to "attack, by any means whatsoever, non-defended localities". The intent is to protect the city's civilians and cultural landmarks from a battle which may be futile. Attacking forces do not always respect the declaration of an "open city".
