BNP Paribas Fortis
BNP Paribas Fortis is an international bank based in Belgium and is a subsidiary of BNP Paribas. It was formerly, together with Fortis Bank Nederland, the banking arm of the financial institution Fortis. After the ultimately unsuccessful ABN-AMRO takeover, the subprime crisis and management mistakes led to the sale of the Dutch and Luxembourg parts of the banking branch to the Dutch and Luxembourg governments. Fortis Bank itself was first partly bought by the Belgian government (for €4.7 billion), then fully purchased by the government and sold to BNP Paribas. Fortis, formally Fortis N.V./S.A., was a Benelux-centered global financial services group active in insurance, banking and investment management, initially formed in 1990 by a three-way Belgian-Dutch merger and headquartered in Brussels. It grew rapidly through multiple acquisitions, and in 2007 was the 20th largest financial services business in the world by revenue. Fortis Bank Nederland (formally Fortis Bank Nederland (Holding) N.V.) was a bank in the Netherlands until 2010. The holding came into being within Fortis Group, as a holding for those Dutch banks taken over by Fortis. In September–October 2008, the Dutch government first planned to invest €4 billion in exchange for an almost 50% interest in the holding (in new-to-be-issued shares), but within a week the agreement was cancelled. The Dutch government took over all the Dutch parts of Fortis for a total of €16.8 billion; in this take-over, Fortis Bank Nederland was valued at €5 billion.
