BMW R1100RS
The BMW R1100RS is a sport-touring motorcycle that was manufactured by BMW Motorrad between 1993 and 2001, and was the first BMW motorcycle to use the R259 "Oilhead" boxer engine. Design The R259 1,085 cc flat-twin engine has a maximum output of . The engine was named "Oilhead" as it had air-cooled cylinders but oil-cooled heads. The BMW R1100RS used a frameless design, using the engine as a stressed member, an approach used by BMW for all subsequent oilheads (except the R1100S). Instead of having conventional telescopic forks, the R1100RS used BMW's own Telelever suspension which bolted directly to the engine. The Telelever design has a superficially similar appearance to telescopic forks, but braking forces are taken back horizontally, minimising "fork dive". Telescopic Fork
A telescopic fork is a form of motorcycle front suspension whose use is so common that it is virtually universal. The telescopic fork uses fork tubes and sliders which contain the springs and dampers. The main advantages of the telescopic fork are that (i) it is simple in design and relatively cheap to manufacture and assemble; (ii) it is lighter than older designs using external components and linkage systems; and (iii) it has a clean and simple appearance that bikers find attractive. Telescopic forks sometimes have gaiters to protect the fork tubes from abrasion and corrosion. A more modern (and more expensive) version of the conventional telescopic fork is the inverted or "USD" (upside-down) fork. BMW R1100R
The BMW R 1100 R is a standard motorcycle with a air/ oil-cooled flat twin engine, made by BMW Motorrad from 1994 through to 1999. Like all of the brand's motorcycles of this period, all 53,685 units were made at BMW's Spandau, Berlin factory. The R 1100 R was succeeded by the model year 2001 R 1150 R. The R 1100 R was reviewed favorably by Ulf Böhringer of the Süddeutsche Zeitung. BMW R NineT
The BMW R nineT is a standard motorcycle made by BMW Motorrad since 2014. It is a retro styled roadster marketed by BMW to custom builders and enthusiasts as a "blank canvas for customizing". All models have anti-lock braking systems (ABS). Automatic stability control (ASC) is available as an option. Design elements The BMW R nineT has several design elements configured to allow the bike to be easily modified, such as separate engine and chassis wiring harnesses and minimal bolts attaching the rear subframe, tail lights, and headlight. BMW R1100S
The BMW R1100S is a sports motorcycle that was manufactured by BMW Motorrad between 1998 and 2005. Introduced some 25 years after the R90S, the company's first sports bike, the R1100S was the first BMW bike having clip-on handlebars, rearset footrests and a removable cowl to cover the pillion seat. Producing nearly 100 hp, it has been described as a "sporty sports-tourer". Design The engine is a flat-twin "oilhead" that has air-cooled cylinders but oil-cooled heads.
