Gulbene (; german: Schwanenburg) is a town in northeastern Latvia. It is an administrative center of Gulbene Municipality. The area of this region is , with a population of 29,797 inhabitants (69,369 sealen, 10,015 urban, 19,782 rural population). History Historical documents first mention the 1224 land division act between the Order of the Sword Brothers and the Archbishop of Riga. In the 14th century, the Archbishop built a stone castle around which a populated place was formed. Agris Galvanovskis (born January 30, 1972) is a Latvian former professional basketball player and a current head coach for BK Liepājas Lauvas of the LBL. Playing career Galvanovskis played professional basketball for Latvian teams VEF Rīga, ASK Rīga, Princips, Bonus, Metropole, ASK/Brocēni/LMT and BK Gulbenes Buki. He also played for Latvian National Team. Mārtiņš Skirmants born December 7, 1977 in Rīga, Latvia is a former Latvian professional basketball player who played the Center position. Playing career Mārtiņš Skirmants started playing basketball in Daugavpils, but later on he moved to Rīga, where he started his pro career. Skirmants spent most of his career playing for LBL clubs. Ivars Timermanis (born February 4, 1982) is a retired Latvian professional basketball player who played the Small forward position. Pro career He was a member of the Latvian national basketball team. He has played in various teams in Latvia and Germany, such as BK Ventspils, Barons LMT and Eisbären Bremerhaven in German Basketball Bundesliga. Kaspars Cipruss (born February 2, 1982) is a Latvian basketball player. Club career Born in Rezekne, Latvia, Cipruss started his basketball career in Latvian powerhouse ASK/Brocēni/LMT in 1998. After extinction of the team he had a brief spell in Latvian team BK Gulbenes Buki. In 2000, he drew interest from Rutgers, Wake Forest, North Carolina State, Georgia Tech, UNLV and Boston College. Cipruss signed a letter of intent to play basketball at Rutgers, but he had letter-of-intent problem, so he decided instead to play professionally in Europe. Pāvels Veselovs (born 15 July 1983 in Rīga, Latvia) is a Latvian professional basketball player who plays the power forward position. Pro career He started his professional basketball career in 2000 with BK Gulbenes Buki. In the team he spent four seasons, the last of them already becoming a team leader. In the summer of 2004, he joined the Latvian champion BK Ventspils, representing it till 2009. In February 2006 he was rented by Gulbenes team, but after the season returned to BK Ventspils. Together with BK Ventspils Veselovs twice has become a champion of Latvia. In July 2011 he signed a contract with Cyprus League club Keravnos Strovolou.
