BC Icemen
The B.C. Icemen were an ice hockey team in the United Hockey League (UHL). They played in Binghamton, New York, at the Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena. History In 1997, the owners of the American Hockey League (AHL)'s Binghamton Rangers moved their franchise to Hartford, Connecticut, as the Hartford Wolf Pack. The team was replaced by the B.C. ("Broome County") Icemen of the lower-level United Hockey League (UHL). The B.C. Icemen logo was created by Endicott native, nationally syndicated cartoonist Johnny Hart, creator of the comic strip '' B.C.''; the logo featured a stylized caveman, similar to those depicted in his comic strip, playing ice hockey. Binghamton () is a city in the U.S. state of New York, and serves as the county seat of Broome County. Surrounded by rolling hills, it lies in the state's Southern Tier region near the Pennsylvania border, in a bowl-shaped valley at the confluence of the Susquehanna and Chenango Rivers. Keith Aucoin
Keith M. Aucoin (born November 6, 1978) is an American former professional ice hockey player who played in the National Hockey League (NHL) for the Carolina Hurricanes, Washington Capitals, New York Islanders, and St. Louis Blues. Playing career He was raised in Waltham and then Chelmsford, Massachusetts, and attended Chelmsford High School. Aucoin spent four seasons with Norwich University in Northfield, Vermont, before turning professional in 2001. Aucoin made his NHL debut during the 2005–06 NHL season with the Carolina Hurricanes. It was at the end of this season that he was a member of the "Black Aces," a group of players kept on the roster as healthy scratches for the Hurricanes' playoff run that ended with the Hurricanes being crowned Stanley Cup champions. Binghamton Devils
The Binghamton Devils were a professional ice hockey team in the American Hockey League (AHL) that played from 2017 to 2021 as the top minor league affiliate of the National Hockey League (NHL)'s New Jersey Devils. Based in Binghamton, New York, the Devils played their home games at Floyd L. Maines Veterans Memorial Arena. The team began play in Binghamton during the 2017–18 season. For the 2020–21 season, the team temporarily relocated to the New Jersey Devils' practice rink for home games in Newark, New Jersey, during the COVID-19 pandemic. Binghamton Whalers
The Binghamton Whalers were an ice hockey team in the American Hockey League, playing in Binghamton, New York, USA, at the Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena. History The Whalers were generally a successful team, making the playoffs seven times and advancing all the way to the Calder Cup Finals in 1982. However, in 1989-90, they turned in a ghastly 11-60-9 record, dead last in the league. The .194 winning percentage was the worst in AHL history at the time. After that season, the franchise was sold to the New York Rangers and their parent, Paramount Communications (formerly Gulf+Western). North American Hockey League (1973–1977)
The North American Hockey League (NAHL) was a low-level minor professional ice hockey league that existed from 1973 to 1977. Several of the NAHL teams operated as developmental ("farm") teams for World Hockey Association franchises. The NAHL was one of two leagues, along with the Southern Hockey League, that were formed after the Eastern Hockey League ceased operations in 1973. The Lockhart Cup was the league's championship trophy. With the loss of a number of franchises, the NAHL elected to fold in September 1977. Broome Dusters
The Broome Dusters were an ice hockey team in the North American Hockey League. They played in Binghamton, New York, United States at the Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena. The team logo was designed by Johnny Hart, artist of the comic strip '' B.C.'' and a Binghamton native. History The Dusters played in the NAHL, which served as the inspiration for the movie '' Slap Shot'', which includes a "Broome County" team. One scene in the film was specifically drawn from events that occurred in Binghamton. In the movie, the Hanson brothers wear black-rimmed, Coke-bottle eyeglasses, and in one game, get into a fight immediately after the opening faceoff. Boyd Kane
Boyd Kane (born April 18, 1978) is a Canadian former professional ice hockey left winger who played in the National Hockey League (NHL). He most notably played over 1000 games in the American Hockey League (AHL), claiming three Calder Cups. Playing career Initially drafted 72nd overall in the 1996 NHL Entry Draft by the Pittsburgh Penguins, Pittsburgh failed to come to terms with Kane on a contract. He re-entered the draft in 1998 and was selected by the New York Rangers 114th overall.
