B12 are a British electronic music duo consisting of Mike Golding and Steve Rutter. First appearing in the early 1990s under a variety of monikers, including Musicology, Redcell and Cmetric, the duo were often mistaken as hailing from Detroit, their sound being comparable to the so-called second wave of Detroit techno Detroit techno is a type of techno music that generally includes the first techno productions by Detroit-based artists during the 1980s and early 1990s. Steve Pickton
Steve Pickton a.k.a. Stasis is an English electronic-techno musician, record producer and sound engineer. He started with a release on B12 Records under his Stasis moniker. After that, he released quite a number of 12"es and albums on several labels as Stasis, Paul W. Teebrooke, Phenomyna and The Otherworld Collective. His latest alias is Soul 223. Steve Pickton's music is characterized by a very dreamy, melodic, melancholic and yet powerful, driving, energetic sound, combining Detroit-influenced beat patterns and basslines with beautiful string sounds. Beside his solo work, he also collaborates with Mark Broom and Dave Hill as Kapé I'llmusier or Ted Howler Rhythm Combo. He also set up a label called Otherworld. Wax Trax! Records
Wax Trax! Records is an American independent record label based in Chicago. It began as a record shop in Denver, Colorado, opened by life partners Jim Nash and Dannie Flesher, who sold the store in 1978 and moved to Chicago. In November of that year, they opened a store under the same name in the Lincoln Park neighborhood. During the 1980s and 1990s, the accompanying record label became a presence on the new wave and punk rock scenes in the city, and an outlet for European bands. The label was purchased in 1992 by TVT Records and was discontinued in 2001. In 2014, it was re-established by Julia Nash, daughter of co-founder Jim Nash. Richard Giraldi of the ''Chicago Sun-Times'' wrote, "As important as Chess Records was to blues and soul music, Chicago's Wax Trax imprint was just as significant to the punk rock, new wave and industrial genres." Artificial Intelligence II
''Artificial Intelligence II'' is a compilation album released via Warp on 30 May 1994. It is the eighth and final release in Warp's ''Artificial Intelligence'' series. It peaked at number 16 on the UK Compilation Chart. Critical reception John Bush of AllMusic gave the album 4 stars out of 5, stating that it is "a bit more sonically experimental" than ''Artificial Intelligence''. Mark Richardson of ''Pitchfork'' gave the album a 6.8 out of 10, saying: "By 1994 there were a lot of people making 'electronic listening music' and this doesn't feel like a particularly special assemblage of what was out there." The Designers Republic
The Designers Republic (also tDR, and styled as The Designers Republic™) is a British graphic design studio based in Sheffield, England, founded in 1986 by Ian Anderson and Nick Phillips. They are best known for electronic music logos, album artwork, and anti-establishment aesthetics, embracing "brash consumerism and the uniform style of corporate brands". Work by tDR is held in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art and the Victoria and Albert Museum. The studio in its larger form closed in January 2009, with Anderson stating it would continue in a more "slimline" form. Time Tourist
''Time Tourist'', or ''TimeTourist'', is an album released by B12 in 1996 on Warp. The inventive packaging for the album makes it appear as if TimeTourist is an educational computer game written in a dystopian year 2166 and which looks back on the late 20th century as a primitive and quaint time in the development of mankind. The track title "VOID/Comm" refers to "VOID/Comm R&D", a fictional 22nd-century company whose "B12 Systems" division developed "WorldCOM", a shared-mind technology which frees humans from physical interpersonal contact and the need to use very much of their brains. "VOID/Comm" is likely in reference to the Voigt/Kampf test administered in ''Blade Runner''. The album's packaging makes reference to a number of other science fiction names corrupted over two centuries — Phettt (Boba Fett), Hein Len (Robert A. Heinlein), Seaclarc ( Arthur C. ''Artificial Intelligence'' is a series of albums by Warp Records released from 1992–1994 to exhibit the capabilities and sounds of electronic music. Warp described the new (post- rave electronic) music as "electronic listening music" to clarify that it was meant more for the mind than the body. The sleevenote on the 1992 compilation said "Are you sitting comfortably? Artificial Intelligence is for long journeys, quiet nights and club drowsy dawns. Listen with an open mind." The series is remarkable for its inclusion of groups and individuals who would later become leaders in modern electronic music, techno, and ambient, such as Alex Paterson, Plaid, Richard D. Electro-Soma
''Electro-Soma'' is the debut studio album by British electronic music duo B12. It was released on Warp on 29 March 1993 and is the fourth release in Warp's ''Artificial Intelligence'' series. Some of the album's tracks had been previously released on the duo's own B12 Record label under their pseudonyms Musicology, Redcell, and Cmetric. Thus, ''Electro-Soma'' functions more as a compilation of some their earliest material than as a proper full-length LP, much like ''Incunabula'' by Autechre. The vinyl release includes the exclusive track "Drift", but excludes the tracks "Debris", "Satori", and "Static Emotion", present on the CD release. A limited edition vinyl release also exists on orange vinyl. Although not noted on the case or booklet, the US compact disc distribution on Wax Trax! Richie Hawtin
Richard "Richie" Hawtin (born June 4, 1970) is a British-Canadian electronic musician and DJ. He became involved with Detroit techno's second wave in the early 1990s, and has been a leading exponent of minimal techno since the mid-1990s. He became known for his recordings under the Plastikman and F.U.S.E. aliases. Under the latter, he released his debut album ''Dimension Intrusion'' (1993) as part of Warp's Artificial Intelligence series. In May 1990, Hawtin and John Acquaviva founded the Plus 8 record label, which they named after their turntable's pitch adjust function. In 1998, Hawtin launched M-nus Records. From 2012-2015, Hawtin held the ENTER. Ibiza weekly party at Space in Ibiza. In 2016, Hawtin launched his own technology company called PLAYdifferently, and released the MODEL 1 mixer, co-designed with Andy Rigby-Jones. Black Dog Productions
The Black Dog is a British electronic music group, founded in 1989 by Ken Downie along with Ed Handley and Andy Turner. The group are considered pioneering figures of techno's ruminative "home-listening" aesthetic in the early 1990s. Following several self-released EPs, the group signed to Warp Records in 1993 and released albums such as ''Bytes'' (1993) and '' Spanners'' (1995). In 1995, Handley and Turner departed to work on their spin-off project Plaid. Downie continued recording under band the name, with Richard and Martin Dust joining. Autechre () is an English electronic music duo consisting of Rob Brown and Sean Booth, both from Rochdale, Greater Manchester. Formed in 1987, they are among the best known acts signed to UK electronic label Warp Records, through which all of Autechre's full-length albums have been released beginning with their 1993 debut ''Incunabula''. Richard David James (born 18 August 1971), best known as Aphex Twin, is an Irish-born British musician, composer and DJ.
