B.L.U.E. Nights
''B.L.U.E. Nights'' is a live album by Bruford Levin Upper Extremities, recorded on their 1998 tour in the United States, and released on Tony Levin's Papa Bear Records label in 2000. It features bassist Levin, guitarist David Torn, trumpeter Chris Botti, and drummer Bill Bruford playing instrumentals that blend jazz, rock, and experimental music. Some of the pieces were improvised in concert. Bruford Levin Upper Extremities
Bruford Levin Upper Extremities (B.L.U.E.) was a musical group consisting of drummer Bill Bruford, bassist Tony Levin, guitarist David Torn, and trumpeter Chris Botti. The group's origins can be traced to Torn's ECM Records album ''Cloud About Mercury'' (1987), which featured Levin and Bruford (along with Mark Isham playing trumpet). Enjoying the chemistry in their work together, the musicians kept in touch with one another, and formed B.L.U.E. in the late 1990s under Bruford and Levin’s joint leadership. Chris Botti took the trumpeter’s role instead of Isham, who was touring with his own band at the time. The band blended an unusual combination of elements including jazz, blues, rock and ambient music to create a unique sound. Bruford and Levin had both been longtime members of King Crimson. Tony Levin
Anthony Frederick Levin (born June 6, 1946) is an American musician and composer, specializing in electric bass, Chapman Stick and upright bass. He also sings and plays synthesizer. Levin is best known for his work with King Crimson (since 1981) and Peter Gabriel (since 1977). He is also a member of Liquid Tension Experiment (1997–1999, 2008–2009, 2020–present), Bruford Levin Upper Extremities (1998–2000) and HoBoLeMa (2008–2010). He has led his own band, Stick Men, since 2010. A prolific session musician since the 1970s, Levin has played on over 500 albums. ''Bruford Levin Upper Extremities'' is a self-titled album by the band Bruford Levin Upper Extremities. It is their only studio recording, released on Tony Levin's independent label Papa Bear Records. Formed by bassist Levin and drummer Bill Bruford (who had worked together as the rhythm section of King Crimson), the group also included guitarist David Torn and trumpeter Chris Botti. David M. Torn (born May 26, 1953) is an American guitarist, composer, and producer. He is known for combining electronic and acoustic instruments and for his use of looping. Christopher Stephen Botti ( ; born October 12, 1962) is an award-winning American trumpeter and composer. In 2013, Botti won the Grammy Award in the Best Pop Instrumental Album category, for the album ''Impressions''. Bill Bruford
William Scott Bruford (born 17 May 1949) is an English former drummer and percussionist who first gained prominence as a founding member of the progressive rock band Yes. After leaving Yes in 1972, Bruford spent the rest of the 1970s recording and touring with King Crimson (1972–1974) and Roy Harper (1975), and touring with Genesis (1976) and U.K. (1978). In 1978, he formed his own group ( Bruford), which was active until 1980. In the 1980s, Bruford returned to King Crimson for three years (1981–1984), collaborated with several artists (including Patrick Moraz and David Torn), and formed his own electric jazz band Earthworks in 1986. The bass guitar, electric bass or simply bass (), is the lowest-pitched member of the string family. It is a plucked string instrument similar in appearance and construction to an electric or an acoustic guitar, but with a longer neck and scale length, and typically four to six strings or courses. The Chapman Stick is an electric musical instrument devised by Emmett Chapman in the early 1970s. A member of the guitar family, the Chapman Stick usually has ten or twelve individually tuned strings and is used to play bass lines, melody lines, chords, or textures.
