''Aşk-ı Memnu'' (; , ) is a Turkish romance novel by Halit Ziya Uşaklıgil. It was serialized in 1899 and 1900 in'' Servet-i Fünun'', a leading Turkish literary magazine of the time. Adaptations ''Aşk-ı Memnu'' was adapted by Halit Refiğ into a TV series in 1975, considered to be the first miniseries on Turkish television. Another TV series adaptation named '' Aşk-ı Memnu'' aired from 2008 to 2010. It takes place in the modern-day Istanbul instead of the novel's late 19th-century setting. Servet-i Fünun
''Servet-i Fünun'' ("''Wealth of Knowledge''", french: Servetifunoun) was an avant-garde journal published in the Ottoman Empire and later in Turkey. Halit Ziya (Uşaklıgil) and the other writers of the "New Literature" ( ota, Edebiyat-ı Cedide, script=Latn) movement published it to inform their readers about European, particularly French, cultural and intellectual movements. In operation from 1891 until 1944, it was for its first year a supplement of the newspaper '' Servet'', but became an independent publication from 1892. Its offices were in Stamboul, the central part of Constantinople. Today the region is known as the Fatih district. Halit Refiğ
Halit Refiğ (5 March 1934 – 11 October 2009) was a Turkish film director, film producer, screenwriter and writer. He made around sixty films, including feature films, documentaries and TV serials. He is considered to be the pioneer of the National Cinema movement and the initiator of the production of TV serials in Turkey. Biography Halit Refiğ graduated from Şişli Terakki High School in 1951 and studied engineering at Robert College in Istanbul. Refiğ directed his first films in 8mm while he served as a military reserve officer in Korea, Japan and Ceylon. He wrote articles on cinema at newspapers in 1956 and published the ''Sinema Dergisi'' magazine together with Nijat Özön. He began his career as Atıf Yılmaz's assistant in 1957 together with Yılmaz Güney. He worked as scriptwriter for Atıf Yılmaz and Memduh Ün. ''Aşk-ı Memnu'' ( Ottoman Turkish for "the forbidden love") is a Turkish drama television series originally broadcast on Kanal D between 2008 and 2010. It is an adaptation of Halit Ziya Uşaklıgil's 1899 novel '' Aşk-ı Memnu'' set in contemporary Istanbul instead of the novel's late 19th-century setting.
