Azerbaijani Soviet Encyclopedia
The ''Azerbaijani Soviet Encyclopedia'' (in Azerbaijani: Azərbaycan Sovet Ensiklopediyası, Cyrillic: Азәрбајҹан Совет Енсиклопедијасы) is a ten volume universal encyclopedia published in Baku, Azerbaijan from 1976 to 1987 by the Academy of Sciences of the Azerbaijan Soviet Socialist Republic. The editors-in-chief were Rasul Rza and Jemil Kuliyev. A special volume dedicated to Azerbaijan was scheduled to be published after the main ten volumes, but due to rising political problems and difficult economic situation, it has not been released. The complete set has been digitized and archived at the Internet Archive as of 2021. An encyclopedia (American English) or encyclopædia (British English) is a reference work or compendium providing summaries of knowledge either general or special to a particular field or discipline. Encyclopedias are divided into articles or entries that are arranged alphabetically by article name or by thematic categories, or else are hyperlinked and searchable. Azerbaijani National Encyclopedia ( az, Azərbaycan Milli Ensiklopediyası) is a universal encyclopedic book written in Azerbaijani language and published in 2010. The main building of publisher is situated in Old City (Icheri Sheher), Boyuk Qala street. Historical overview The initial attempt for publishing the Azerbaijani encyclopedia was in the early years of the 20th century but was not published at that time. The decree for Publication of Azerbaijani Soviet Encyclopedia was signed on December 30, 1965, and the first volume was published in 1970, but publication was suspended because of non-compliance with the Soviet regulations. In accordance with the order in 1975, the encyclopedia was restored again. During the years of 1976-1987, the publication of a new version of the encyclopedia was completed, replacing the previous version . Great Soviet Encyclopedia
The ''Great Soviet Encyclopedia'' (GSE; ) is one of the largest Russian-language encyclopedias, published in the Soviet Union from 1926 to 1990. After 2002, the encyclopedia's data was partially included into the later ''Bolshaya rossiyskaya entsiklopediya'' (or '' Great Russian Encyclopedia'') in an updated and revised form. The GSE claimed to be "the first Marxist–Leninist general-purpose encyclopedia". Origins The idea of the ''Great Soviet Encyclopedia'' emerged in 1923 on the initiative of Otto Schmidt, a member of the Russian Academy of Sciences. Rasul Rza
Rasul Rza (real name Rasul Ibrahim oghlu Rzayev – az, Rəsul İbrahim oğlu Rzayev) (1910 – 1981 in Baku), was an Azerbaijani writer, Hero of Socialist Labour (1980), People's Poet of Azerbaijan, Laureate of Soviet State Award and the Chairman of the Writers' Union of Azerbaijan. He was the husband of Azerbaijani writer Nigar Rafibeyli and the father of writer Anar Rzayev. Life and writings Rasul Rza was born Rasul Ibrahim oglu Rzayev on May 19, 1910 in Goychay (city), Goychay. He studied in Transcaucasus Communist University, Azerbaijan Scientific Research Institute and Soviet Cinematography Institute. Rasul Rza was Chairman of Writers' Union of Azerbaijan in 1939, minister of Azerbaijani Cinematography (1945–48), chief editor of the Azerbaijani Soviet Encyclopedia (1966–75), member of board of directors of USSR Union of Writers (from 1964).
