Ayr Raiders
The Ayr Bruins were an ice hockey club based in Ayr, Scotland between 1939 and 1992. Established in 1939 under the name Ayr Raiders, the club played their home games at the Ayr Ice Rink (Beresford Terrace) between 1939 and 1972 and at Ayr Ice Rink (Limekiln Road) between 1974 and 1991. The Bruins played one season in the Northern League before withdrawing, and returned to the league in 1969. They continued to play until the closure of the Ayr Ice Rink, before returning again in 1974. The side won the Icy Smith Cup (now the British Championship) in 1976 and became a charter member of the British Hockey League's Premier Division in 1983. They made another appearance in the British Championship final in 1989 but suffered 6-3 defeat to the Nottingham Panthers. The Bruins changed their name back to the Ayr Raiders in 1989 and suffered relegation from the Premier Division at the end of the 91/92 season. The Scottish National League is an ice hockey league based in Scotland comprising 8 teams. The league sits below the Elite Ice Hockey League (EIHL) in the UK ice hockey structure alongside England's National Ice Hockey League (NIHL). Following the demise of the British National League at the end of the 2004–05 season, the Fife Flyers and Dundee Stars transferred to the SNL, raising both the league's profile. British Hockey League
The British Hockey League was the top-flight ice hockey league in the United Kingdom from 1980 until 1996 (with a short break between 1981 and 1982), when it was replaced by the Ice Hockey Superleague and the British National League. The league replaced three regional leagues: the Inter-City League in southern England, the English League North in northern England and the Northern League in Scotland. The league was sponsored by Heineken until 1993 and during this period was best known as the ''Heineken League''. The league changed format several times. Northern League (ice Hockey, 1966–1982)
The Northern League was the top-flight ice hockey league in Scotland and initially northern England, from 1966. In 1982 it merged with the Inter-City League and the English League North to form the British Hockey League. The League developed out of the far more limited Scottish League, established in 1962. In 1963, The Wasps, based at Whitley Bay, joined and by 1966 a regular but limited schedule had been established. In 1966, the better British teams, mostly in Scotland, agreed to form a league to provide matches throughout the season. Initially of seven teams joined. It proved a success, and in 1970 various English teams formed a Southern League, leaving the Northern League as an entirely Scottish competition. Ayr Ice Rink
Ayr Ice Rink was an ice arena in Ayr, Scotland that opened in 1939 and was used for ice skating, ice hockey and curling. The rink was notable as being the home of professional ice hockey clubs Ayr Raiders and Ayr Bruins. The building was located at 21 Beresford Terrace on the former site of Beresford Park, home of Ayr Parkhouse Football Club. Ayr Ice Rink Ltd purchased the land from London Midland and Scottish Railway in 1938 to build the rink. The property was demolished in 1972 to make way for a Safeway supermarket and today the site is occupied by two retail stores and carpark. A new ice rink was built at Limekiln Road on the site of the defunct Tams Brig Stadium and is owned by Ayr Curling Club. The Nottingham Panthers are a British professional ice hockey club based in Nottingham, England. They are members of the Elite Ice Hockey League. Centrum Arena (Prestwick)
The Centrum Arena was a 2,733 seat ice arena in Prestwick, South Ayrshire, Scotland that opened on 25 August 1996. The arena was used during the winter months for recreational ice skating and ice hockey matches. In the summer months, the arena was used for various events such as the Chinese State Circus. The Centrum was famous as being the home of the Ayr Scottish Eagles ice hockey club from 1996 until 2002. The building was located at 125 Ayr Road on public land and was demolished in 2009. Today the site is occupied by a supermarket.
