Avon Park, Florida
Avon Park is a city in Highlands County, Florida, United States. As of the 2010 census the population was 8,836, and in 2018 the estimated population was 10,695. It is the oldest city in Highlands County, and was named after Stratford-upon-Avon, England. History The first permanent white settler in Avon Park was Oliver Martin Crosby, a Connecticut native who moved to the area in 1884 to study the wildlife of the Everglades. By 1886, enough people had followed that the town of "Lake Forest" was founded. As president of the Florida Development Company, he recruited settlers to the area, many of whom were from England, including many from the town of Stratford-upon-Avon, who gave the town its name. In 2006, then-mayor Thomas Macklin (Republican) proposed City Ordinance 08-06, which would have blocked the issuance or renewal of city licenses to businesses that hired undocumented aliens, fined any property owner who rented and leased property to undocumented aliens, and established E ... Lake Lelia
Lake Lelia is a natural fresh water lake on the south side of Avon Park, Florida. The northeast section of the lake is within the Avon Park city limits. The lake is longest east to west, being approximately long. Its north-to-south width averages at wide. The Florida Atlas of Lakes lists Lake Lelia as having a surface area of . This lake is bounded by South Florida Community College at its south shore. A few houses dot its shore, but is it mostly bounded by woods and citrus trees. On the northeast two sets of railroad tracks are just off its shore. On its south side a pier built from the college Citrus Center extends into the lake. Lake Anoka
Lake Anoka is a natural, almost circular lake just south of the city limits of Avon Park, Florida. The west side of the lake was filled in so US 27 could pass through that area. Lake Anoka has a surface area of forty-eight acres and has a maximum depth of fifty-nine feet. There is no public access for boating on this lake, but fishing is allowed near US 27. Lake Isis
Lake Isis is a rectangular lake in the northern part of Avon Park, Florida. It has very clear water. The lake is surrounded by white-sand beaches. The lake is a natural fresh water, freshwater lake. There is no public access to the lake, as all the property surrounding it is privately owned. Houses surround the west, north and east sides. The property along the entire south side is owned by Avon Park Holiness Camp, opened in 1939. At one time Lake Isis was used as a scuba diving training site, and the property held by the church camp was used by area residents. Lake Tulane in Florida is one of numerous natural lakes that occupy sinkholes, which were formed by the dissolution of Eocene limestone at depth. Karst
Karst is a topography formed from the dissolution of soluble rocks such as limestone, dolomite, and gypsum. It is characterized by underground drainage systems with sinkholes and caves. It has also been documented for more weathering-resistant rocks, such as quartzite, given the right conditions. Subterranean drainage may limit surface water, with few to no rivers or lakes. Zolfo Springs, Florida
Zolfo Springs is a town in Hardee County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,827 at the 2010 census, up from 1,641 at the 2000 census. History Early prosperity in the area (known initially as simply Zolfo) was due to its location along the Florida Cracker Trail, a cattle trail from Bradenton to Fort Pierce. Cattle herded from this area and the Florida Heartland was run to the coasts along this route as early as 1850. The Florida Cracker Trail today includes parts of State Road 64 and State Road 66 through Zolfo Springs. In 1886, transportation improved through Zolfo when the Florida Southern Railway (later the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad) was built through the town on its way from Bartow to Punta Gorda. The railroad built a depot in the town and a post office was established the same year. The railroad was removed in the early 1980s. Florida State Road 64
State Road 64 (SR 64) extends from City Road 789 (former County Road 789) near the Gulf of Mexico in Holmes Beach on Anna Maria Island in Manatee County to US 27/ US 98 in Avon Park in Highlands County. State Road 64 travels from west to east through the counties of Manatee, Hardee and Highlands. It is a mostly rural two-lane highway going through only two cities, Bradenton and Zolfo Springs. It crosses the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway as well as the Braden River, Lake Manatee, and the Myakka River. State Road 17 (SR 17), also formerly known as U.S. Route 27 Alternate (US 27 Alt.), is a north–south state road in the U.S. state of Florida. It is split into two sections.
