In its time, it was an internationally known company. History Ruston and Hornsby Aveling-Barford underwent a dramatic revival. First established in 1850 its owners incorporated a limited liability company on 16 July 1895 to hold the business with the name Aveling & Porter. Aveling & Porter
Aveling and Porter was a British agricultural engine and steamroller (road roller) manufacturer. Thomas Aveling and Richard Thomas Porter entered into partnership in 1862, and developed a steam engine three years later in 1865. By the early 1900s, the company had become the largest manufacturer of steamrollers (road rollers) in the world. The company used a rampant horse as its logo derived from the White Horse of Kent. Partners Thomas Aveling Thomas Aveling was born 11 September 1824 at Elm, Cambridgeshire. His mother was widowed while Aveling was still young and the family settled in Hoo St Werburgh, Hoo (Rochester, Kent). His mother remarried to the Rev. John D'Urban of Hoo. Grantham
Grantham () is a market and industrial town in the South Kesteven district of Lincolnshire, England, situated on the banks of the River Witham and bounded to the west by the A1 road. Barford & Perkins
Barford & Perkins were road roller and agricultural machinery manufacturers in Peterborough, England. The original business began in 1840. Their machinery was distributed internationally. In 1920 it joined the engineering combine Agricultural & General Engineers (AGE) which failed in 1932. Barford & Perkins relocated from Peterborough at the end of the 1920s into part of the Aveling & Porter works in Rochester. Both companies made road rollers but the ranges were complementary, the Barford rollers were petrol-powered —the engines were made by Peter Brotherhood— and smaller than Aveling's steam-powered rollers.David Boulton. Ruston & Hornsby was an industrial equipment manufacturer in Lincoln, England founded in 1918. The company is best known as a manufacturer of narrow and standard gauge diesel locomotives and also of steam shovels. Other products included cars, steam locomotives and a range of internal combustion engines, and later gas turbines. It is now a subsidiary of Siemens. Loyd Carrier
The Loyd Carrier was one of a number of small tracked vehicles used by the British and Commonwealth forces in the Second World War to transport equipment and men about the battlefield. Alongside the Bren, Scout and Machine Gun Carriers, they also moved infantry support weapons. Design and development The Loyd Carrier was built upon the mechanicals (engine, gearbox and transmission) of a 15 cwt 4x2 Fordson 7V truck with mild steel bodywork to which armour plate - 'BP Plate' (from "Bullet Proof") - was bolted (to the front and upper sides) depending on application.
