Edward Aveling
Edward Bibbins Aveling (29 November 1849 – 2 August 1898) was an English comparative anatomist and popular spokesman for Darwinian evolution, atheism, and socialism. He was also a playwright and actor. Aveling was the author of numerous scientific books and political pamphlets; he is perhaps best known for his popular work ''The Student's Darwin'' (1881); he also translated Das Kapital, Volume I, the first volume of Karl Marx's ''Das Kapital'' and Friedrich Engels' ''Socialism: Utopian and Scientific''. Aveling was elected vice-president of the National Secular Society in 1880–84, and was a member of the Democratic Federation and then a member of the executive council of the Social Democratic Federation, and was also a founding member of the Socialist League (UK, 1885), Socialist League and the Independent Labour Party. Eleanor Marx
Jenny Julia Eleanor Marx (16 January 1855 – 31 March 1898), sometimes called Eleanor Aveling and known to her family as Tussy, was the English-born youngest daughter of Karl Marx. Francis Aveling
Francis Arthur Powell Aveling MC ComC (25 December 1875 – 6 March 1941) was a Canadian psychologist and Catholic priest. He married Ethel Dancy of Steyning, Sussex in 1925. Life Francis Aveling was born at St. Catharines, Ontario 25 December 1875. He went to Bishop Ridley College in Ontario and McGill University before studying at Keble College at the University of Oxford, England. Aveling was received into the Roman Catholic Church by Father Luke Rivington in 1896 and entered the Pontificio Collegio Canadese in Rome. There he earned his doctor of divinity degree. He was ordained to the priesthood in 1899, and served as a curate in Tottenham, before becoming first rector of Westminster Cathedral Choir School. He was also a chaplain at the Cathedral, and to St. Wilfrid's Convent, Chelsea. Harry Aveling
Harry Aveling (born 1942 in Sydney) is an Australian scholar, translator and teacher. He specialises in Indonesian and Malaysian literature, and Translation Studies. He received the degrees of Doctor of Philosophy in Malay Studies from the National University of Singapore and Doctor of Creative Arts (DCA) from the University of Technology, Sydney. Besides his academic writing, he has translated extensively from Indonesian and Malay, from Vietnamese Francophone literature, and also co-translated from Hindi. He has been awarded the ''Anugerah Pengembangan Sastra'' (Literature Development Award) for his translation work. Aveling has two sons, a daughter and five granddaughters. Martin Aveling
Martin Aveling 'Mart' (born 1982) is an artivist who uses his work to promote wildlife conservation and generate funds for its support. Early life Mart grew up in England, Kenya and the Democratic Republic of Congo with his conservationist parents, Conrad and Rosalind Aveling, who at one time ran the Mountain Gorilla Project in Rwanda. While the family was moving to southern Sudan in 1983, Conrad was kidnapped by Sudanese rebels and held hostage. After a dramatic rescue, plans changed, and they ended up moving to the Democratic Republic of Congo where they helped to establish the International Gorilla Conservation Programme (IGCP) in the Virunga National Park. Thomas Aveling (1824–1882) was an English engineer and founder of Aveling & Porter, known as a manufacturer of agricultural equipment and steamrollers. Background and early life Thomas Aveling was born 11 September 1824 at Elm, Cambridgeshire, the son of Thomas Aveling (1801–1835), and his wife, Ann Hobson (1802–1873); he was the elder brother of James Hobson Aveling. His paternal grandfather Thomas Aveling of Whittlesey was High Sheriff of Cambridgeshire and Huntingdonshire in 1802; his father was a landowner. His mother was the daughter of Francis Hobson of Eaton Socon, then in Bedfordshire. Widowed in 1835, she remarried in 1836 at Eaton Socon to the Rev. John D'Urban, curate at High Halstow, in Kent. Thomas Aveling (minister)
Thomas William Baxter Aveling (11 May 1815 – 3 July 1884) was a British independent congregational minister, author and memorialist. Life Born at Castletown in the Isle of Man, Aveling was the son of a soldier and an Irish mother. He received his theological training at Highbury College, London. In 1838, Aveling was appointed to the pastorate of the Kingsland Congregational Church in Hackney. Reportedly an eloquent and popular pastor, he served at Kingsland for the rest of his life. From 1848 to 1853 he edited the ''Jewish Herald'', the monthly journal of the British Society for the Propagation of the Gospel Among the Jews (BSPG).
