The Austria national alpine ski team, also known as Wunderteam, represents Austria in International alpine skiing competitions such as Winter Olympic Games, FIS Alpine Ski World Cup and FIS Alpine World Ski Championships. Alpine Skiing
Alpine skiing, or downhill skiing, is the pastime of sliding down snow-covered slopes on skis with fixed-heel bindings, unlike other types of skiing ( cross-country, Telemark, or ski jumping), which use skis with free-heel bindings. Whether for recreation or for sport, it is typically practiced at ski resorts, which provide such services as ski lifts, artificial snow making, snow grooming, restaurants, and ski patrol. "Off-piste" skiers—those skiing outside ski area boundaries—may employ snowmobiles, helicopters or snowcats to deliver them to the top of a slope. Back-country skiers may use specialized equipment with a free-heel mode, including 'sticky' skins on the bottoms of the skis to stop them sliding backwards during an ascent, then locking the heel and removing the skins for their descent. Karl Cordin (born 3 November 1948) is an Austrian former alpine skier who did only compete in Downhill Races; he competed in the 1972 Winter Olympics, becoming 7th silver medal at FIS Alpine World Ski Championships 1970 in downhill. Biography Cording did win three World Cup races: on February 21, 1970, at Jackson Hole, on December 20th, 1970, at Val-d’Isère, and on December 18, 1973, at Zell am See; he did become five-times second and twice third too. He also could achieve the Downhill World Cup in 1969-70. He won the silver medal in the FIS Alpine Skiing World Championships 1970 and became fourth in the FIS Alpine Skiing World Championships 1974; in both races he was overtaken by a racer with a higher number. Johann Ernst "Hansi" Hinterseer (born 2 February 1954) is an Austrian singer, actor, entertainer and former alpine skier. Sports career Hinterseer is the son of Ernst Hinterseer, who won a gold medal in slalom skiing at the 1960 Winter Olympics. Hans Hinterseer also became a member of the Austrian ski team. He won six alpine skiing World Cup races in the slalom and giant slalom, and the overall giant slalom contest at the 1973 Alpine Skiing World Cup. Hartmann "Harti" Weirather (born January 25, 1958) is a former World Cup alpine ski racer from Austria. Born in Reutte, Tyrol, he specialized in the downhill event. Racing career During the early 1980s, Weirather won six World Cup downhill races and won the downhill at the 1982 World Championships in Schladming, Austria. In addition, he won the World Cup season title in downhill in 1981. Weirather's win at Kitzbühel in 1982 was the first-ever under two minutes on the full-length ''Streif'' course; his time (1:57.20) stood as the course record for ten years. Rainer Schönfelder (born 13 June 1977) is an Austrian former skier who won the 2003–2004 men's World Cup slalom title. Career Born in Bleiburg, Carinthia, Austria, Schönfelder made his debut in the 1995–1996 season, finishing 115th in the overall rankings. He quickly began to excel in the slalom events, and improved his position in the overall World Cup standing to 10th place by the 2003–2004 season. Johannes "Hannes" Reichelt (born 5 July 1980) is a retired Austrian World Cup alpine ski racer. He competed mainly in downhill and super-G, as well as in giant slalom. Biography Born in Altenmarkt im Pongau in Salzburg, Reichelt made his World Cup debut in December 2001. He made his first podium in December 2002 and won his first World Cup race, a super-G, in December 2005. Reinfried Herbst (born 11 October 1978 in Salzburg) is a retired slalom skier from Austria. Herbst won the silver medal for the men's slalom event at the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin, Italy. On 11 March 2006 he won his first World Cup race in Shigakogen Slalom. He was 8th in the slalom World Cup standings after the 2006 season. In July, 2006 he injured his knee in a charity soccer game.
