The Paralympics Australia recognises the achievements of Paralympic athletes, coaches and administrators through several awards. These awards generally relate to performances at the Summer and Winter Paralympic Games and are not necessarily awarded annually. Paralympics Australia (PA) previously called the Australian Paralympic Committee (APC) (1998–2019) is the National Paralympic Committee in Australia for the Paralympic Games movement. Melissa Perrine
Melissa Perrine (born 21 February 1988) is a B2 classified visually impaired para-alpine skier from Australia. She has competed at the four Winter Paralympics from 2010 to 2022. At the 2015 IPC Alpine Skiing World Championships, she won three gold, one silver and one bronze medals. At the 2018 Winter Paralympics, she won two bronze medals. Personal Melissa Perrine was born in Nowra, New South Wales, on 21 February 1988. In 2007, the Wingecarribee Council area named her their Young Australian of the Year. She was featured on the Australian Broadcasting Corporation's ''X Paralympic Games'' in March 2010. Matthew Bugg
Matthew Bugg (born 25 February 1981) is an Australian sailor. He represented Australia at the 2012 Summer Paralympics in the 2.4mR class sailing event. He won a bronze medal at the 2015 IFDS World Championships. He won a silver medal in the 2.4mR at the 2016 Rio Paralympics. Personal Bugg was born on 25 February 1981, and is from Lindisfarne, Tasmania. He is a paraplegic as a result of a snowboarding accident when he was twenty-three years old. Liesl Tesch
Liesl Dorothy Tesch AM (born 17 May 1969) is an Australian wheelchair basketball player, sailor, and politician. She is a Labor Party member of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly, representing Gosford since the 2017 Gosford state by-election. Tesch became an incomplete paraplegic after a mountain bike accident at the age of 19. She competed in her national wheelchair basketball team at five paralympics, winning three medals, and was the first woman to play the sport professionally. Daniel Fitzgibbon
Daniel Fitzgibbon, (born 15 June 1976) is an Australian Paralympic sailor, who won a silver medal at the 2008 Summer Paralympics in Beijing. He won gold medals at the 2012 London and 2016 Rio Paralympics with partner Liesl Tesch in the two person SKUD 18. Biography Daniel Gerard Fitzgibbon was born in the Brisbane suburb of Manly on 15 June 1976. Having sailed since the age of five, he joined the Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron in 1990. On 29 March 1997, an incident occurred at the Middle Harbour Yacht Club jetty in which he broke his neck, leaving him a quadraplegic. He sued the Waterways Authority for negligence at the New South Wales Supreme Court. Fitzgibbon, who claimed that he was pushed into the water, stated that it was their failure to include a handrail in the design of the jetty that caused him to fall off. Australia National Wheelchair Rugby Team
Wheelchair rugby is a sport with national representation at the Paralympic games. The Australian Team is known as the 'Steelers'. Australia has competed at every Paralympics Games since the sport gained full Paralympic Medal status at the 2000 Summer Paralympics. The Steelers also competed in the 1996 Summer Paralympics where wheelchair rugby was a demonstration sport. The 'Steelers' defeated Canada at the 2012 London Games to win its first gold medal. In 2014, it won its first World Championship by defeating Canada. Australia Men's National Wheelchair Basketball Team
The Australia men's national wheelchair basketball team is the men's wheelchair basketball side that represents Australia in international competitions. The team is known as the Rollers. Australia took the gold medal at the 1996 Atlanta Paralympic Games and 2008 Beijing Paralympic Games. Australia has competed at every men's wheelchair basketball tournament at the Paralympic Games except 1964. Kevin Coombs was Australia's first captain of the men's wheelchair basketball team. Iryna Dvoskina (born 22 December 1958) is a Ukraine-born Australian athletics coach who works with Paralympic athletes. Biography Being an only child, she came to Australia in 2003 to be closer to her mother Fira (born 20 September 1934), who had moved to Australia in 1996. Her mother has carried on her successful coaching career in New South Wales. She undertook a four-year coaching degree at university in Ukraine. Josh Hanlon (born 7 August 1997) is an Australian Paralympic alpine skier who represented Australia at the 2022 Winter Paralympics. Personal Josh Hanlon was born on 7 August 1997. He comes from Weethalle, New South Wales. At age 20, Hanlon 's had severe bacterial infection, which resulted in toxic shock and sepsis and led to him becoming a double below-knee amputee and the loss of his right hand at the wrist. William Martin (swimmer)
William Michael Martin, (born 22 November 2000) is an Australian Paralympic swimmer. He won three gold and one silver medals at the 2020 Summer Paralympics in Tokyo, breaking two world records and a Paralympic record in the process. Personal Martin was born on 22 November 2000. Martin's impairment is the result of a stroke he suffered in 2007. He has a vision impairment, and his hand also shakes due to a tremor. He was a learn-to-swim teacher at Nudgee College Swimming in Brisbane. As of 2021, he is undertaking an urban planning degree at the Queensland University of Technology.
