Australian Hotel
The Australian Hotel is a heritage-listed hotel at 100-104 Cumberland Street, The Rocks, City of Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. The current structure was constructed from 1914 to 1915, and Property NSW owns the property, being added to the New South Wales State Heritage Register on 10 May 2002. History The site is known to have been built upon by the 1820s. As per other ridges of The Rocks, it was likely occupied by the encampment of settlers in the first weeks of the First Fleet's arrival in 1788. Terrace houses occupied the site from the s until the construction of the hotel complex in 1914. The Australian Hotel is one of the oldest continually licensed pubs in Sydney. In 1824 it was licensed to George Morris and referenced in a ''Sydney Gazette'' article on 12th August 1824, describing the pub as ″Those noble and extensive premises… are now occupied by George Morris, late of the Greyhound-Inn, Castlereagh Street. The Rocks, New South Wales
The Rocks is a suburb, tourist precinct and historic area of Sydney's city centre, in the state of New South Wales, Australia. It is located on the southern shore of Sydney Harbour, immediately north-west of the Sydney central business district. The New South Wales State Heritage Register, also known as NSW State Heritage Register, is a heritage list of places in the state of New South Wales, Australia, that are protected by New South Wales legislation, generally covered by the Heritage Act 1977 and its 2010 amendments. The register is administered by the Heritage Council of NSW via Heritage NSW, a division of the Government of New South Wales Department of Planning and Environment. The register was created in 1999 and includes items protected by heritage schedules that relate to the State, and to regional and to local environmental plans. As a result, the register contains over 20,000 statutory-listed items in either public or private ownership of historical, cultural, and architectural value. First Fleet
The First Fleet was a fleet of 11 ships that brought the first European and African settlers to Australia. It was made up of two Royal Navy vessels, three store ships and six convict transports. On 13 May 1787 the fleet under the command of Captain Arthur Phillip, with over 1400 people (convicts, marines, sailors, civil officers and free settlers), left from Portsmouth, England and took a journey of over and over 250 days to eventually arrive in Botany Bay, New South Wales, where a penal colony would become the first European settlement in Australia. Sydney Cove Redevelopment Authority
The Sydney Cove Redevelopment Authority was an agency of the Government of New South Wales from 1970 to 1999. Its predecessor was the Sydney Cove Authority. It was established on 12 January 1970 under the ''Sydney Cove Redevelopment Act 1968'' to oversee redevelopment plans for the historic inner suburb of The Rocks.
