Australian Commonwealth Games Association
Commonwealth Games Australia (CGA) is the Commonwealth Games Association for Australia, and is responsible for representing and promoting the Commonwealth Sport movement in the country, and organises the participation of athletes at the Commonwealth Games and Commonwealth Youth Games. It changed it name from the Australian Commonwealth Games Association to Commonwealth Games Australia in 2015. The Commonwealth Games have been held in Australia five times, most recently the 2018 Commonwealth Games were held on the Gold Coast, Queensland. Role The CGA is one of 72 Commonwealth Games Associations currently recognised by the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF). William Dixon (rower)
William John Dixon (9 November 1912 – 10 June 1969) was an Australian rower. He was a four-time national champion who competed in the men's double sculls event at the 1936 Summer Olympics. Club and state rowing Dixon was educated at St Joseph's College, Hunters Hill with 1929 as his senior year. His senior rowing was from the Sydney Rowing Club and in the 1931–32 season he stroked a Sydney maiden four. He won a New South Wales state championship in the coxed four the following year. In 1933 Dixon made state selection in the New South Wales men's eight which contested and won the King's Cup at the Interstate Regatta. He rowed in four successive King's Cup winning New South Wales eights between 1933 and 1936 and then contested the event on three further occasions from 1937 to 1939. Edward Robert Bromley (4 July 1912 – 12 April 2004) was an Australian rower. He competed in the men's coxless pair event at the 1948 Summer Olympics. Doug Bowden (rowing)
Douglas William Bowden (24 Nov 1906 – 20 April 1996) was an Australian rowing coxswain. He was twice a national champion and an Australian representative who won a silver medal at the 1938 Commonwealth Games. Early life and rowing career Born in Glebe in Sydney, Bowden's father died when he was seven and he left school aged 14 to take employment with the brewery Tooth and Co. His early club coxing was from the Glebe Rowing Club where he was later in life honoured with a life membership. He next joined the North Shore Rowing Club in Sydney where he was both a coxswain and coach and had competitive and representative success. He coached the club's eight to victory in the 1937 Henley-on-Yarra in Melbourne. Bowden first made state selection in the 1935 New South Wales men's eight which contested and won the King's Cup at the 1935 Interstate Regatta. He was the manager and the coxswain of that crew. The 1938 British Empire Games was the third British Empire Games, the event that evolved to become the Commonwealth Games. Held in Sydney, Australia from 5–12 February 1938, they were timed to coincide with Sydney's sesqui-centenary (150 years since the foundation of British settlement in Australia). Venues included the Sydney Cricket Ground (the main stadium), the Sydney Sports Ground, North Sydney Olympic Pool and Henson Park. An estimated 40,000 people attended the opening ceremony. A competitors' residential village was established within the grounds of the Sydney Showground. The star of the games was the Australian athlete Decima Norman, who won five gold medals in track and field.
