William Kerr, 1st Earl Of Lothian
William Kerr, first Earl of Lothian of a new creation (1605–1675) was a Scottish nobleman. Career Kerr signed the national covenant in 1638 and marched with the Scots into England in 1640, being present when the English were routed at the Battle of Newburn. Afterwards, he became Governor of Newcastle. He was appointed one of the four commissioners of the treasury in 1642, was lieutenant-general of the Scots Army in Ireland, and was appointed privy councillor in the same year. He entered Parliament in 1644 and joined Lord Argyll in expedition against Lord Montrose during the Wars of the Three Kingdoms in 1644. He was one of the commissioners sent to treat with the king at Holmby House in 1647. He was appointed secretary of state in 1649 and was one of the commissioners sent by the Scottish Parliament to protest against proceeding to extremities against the king, visiting Charles II in exile at Breda. William Munro Kerr
Vice Admiral Sir William Munro Kerr (4 March 1876 – 26 October 1959) was a Royal Navy officer who served as First Naval Member and Chief of the Australian Naval Staff from 1929 to 1931. Naval service Born the son of George Munro Kerr and his wife, Jessie Elizabeth Martin, Kerr joined the Royal Navy as a midshipman in 1892. In November 1901, Kerr—by then a lieutenant—was lent to the Royal Naval College, Greenwich for the compass course. In May the following year he was appointed lieutenant in charge of navigation at HMS ''Hermione'', serving at the Mediterranean station. William Kerr (1836-1911) was an Irish-American architect. Born in Ireland and educated in Natick and Boston, Massachusetts, he moved to Key West, Florida Key West ( es, Cayo Hueso) is an island in the Straits of Florida, within the U.S. state of Florida. ''The Argus'' was an Australian daily morning newspaper in Melbourne from 2 June 1846 to 19 January 1957, and was considered to be the general Australian newspaper of record for this period. Widely known as a conservative newspaper for most of its history, it adopted a left-leaning approach from 1949. ''The Argus''s main competitor was David Syme's more liberal-minded newspaper, ''The Age''. History The newspaper was originally owned by William Kerr, who was also Melbourne's town clerk from 1851–1856 and had been a journalist at the ''Sydney Gazette'' before moving to Melbourne in 1839 to work on John Pascoe Fawkner's newspaper, the '' Port Phillip Patriot''. William Kerr (gardener)
William Kerr (died 1814) was a Scottish gardener and plant hunter, the first Western professional full-time plant collector active in China. He also collected in Java and Luzon in the Philippines. Among the plants he sent back to Kew Gardens was the vigorous shrub, at first cosseted in greenhouses, named in his honour, '' Kerria''. Kerr sent back to Britain examples of 238 plants new to European gardeners and to science, without, it appears, stirring far from the European trading sites of Canton and Macao, or Manila. A native of Hawick in the Scottish Borders, he was a gardener at Kew, where he was noted by Sir Joseph Banks, and, following instruction by Banks, sent to China in 1804. He remained eight years. Kerr's finds, discovered in local Chinese gardens and plant nurseries, included ''Euonymus japonicus'', ''Lilium lancifolium'', ''Pieris japonica'', ''Nandina domestica'', ''Begonia grandis'' and the white-flowered ''Rosa banksiae'', named for his patron's wife. William Howard "Bud" Kerr (November 10, 1915 – April 9, 1964) was an American football player and coach. He was an All-American football player at Notre Dame in 1939. He later served as the head football coach at the University of Dayton, from 1956 to 1959. Biography Kerr was born in Tarrytown, New York but moved to Newburgh at three years old. He attended Newburgh Free Academy where he was in the school bad for his first three years and only joined the football team as a part-time player as a senior. After high school, he worked for four years in order to afford college. William Kerr (baseball)
William Warden Kerr (September 9, 1847 – February 18, 1917) was an American business executive in wholesale grocery, best remembered as controlling owner of the Pittsburgh Pirates professional baseball team of the National League (NL) from through with Phil Auten. Baseball ownership Kerr and Phil Auten were stockholders of the Pittsburgh Burghers of the Players' League in that league's only season in 1890. In early 1893, the two men gained a controlling interest in Pittsburgh's National League club, the Pirates, which had absorbed and merged ownership with the defunct Players' League club, when they and manager Al Buckenberger bought out the stock of William Chase Temple. Kerr and Auten sold their majority share of the Pirates to Barney Dreyfuss prior to the 1901 season. Kerr was known throughout the organization for his short temper. Billy Kerr (26 February 1945 – 14 August 2012) was an Irish cyclist. He competed in the individual road race event at the 1980 Summer Olympics. Biography Kerr was born in February 1945 in Ballymena, Northern Ireland. At the age of 16, Kerr was working in a local shoe factory and later joined the Ballymena Road Club. However, as a junior cyclist, Kerr initially had to give up the sport due to a back injury. After successful physiotherapy, Kerr won multiple club races and national championships in the 1970s. Kerr's took part in the road race and team pursuit events at the 1978 Commonwealth Games, his first international races. Four years later, at the 1982 Commonwealth Games, Kerr was part of the team that finished in fourth place in the team time trial.
