The Australia Stakes, registered as the Stanley Wootton Stakes, is a Moonee Valley Racing Club Group races, Group 2 Thoroughbred horse race raced under weight for age conditions, for three year olds and older, over a distance of 1200 metres at Moonee Valley Racecourse in Melbourne, Australia in late January. Total prize money for the race is A$350,000. History Originally the race was scheduled in March, but in 2002 the MVRC moved the race to late January. The renaming of the race to the current name coincides with the Australia Day public holiday. Moonee Valley Racecourse
Moonee Valley Racecourse, currently marketed as The Valley, is a horse-racing track in Moonee Ponds, Melbourne, Victoria Australia. History Moonee Valley Racecourse was established in 1883 by William Samuel (W.S.) Cox, who purchased a farm the previous year belonging to John F. Feehan for the purpose of establishing a racetrack. Being entirely freehold land owned by a private club, this separates Moonee Valley from other Melbourne racecourses such as Caulfield and Flemington. Expansion of the racecourse facilities occurred in the 1960s, funded by compensation for land acquired for the construction of the adjacent Tullamarine Freeway. Flemington Racecourse
Flemington Racecourse is a major horse racing venue located in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. It is most notable for hosting the Melbourne Cup, which is the world's richest handicap and the world's richest 3200-metre horse race. The racecourse is situated on low alluvial flats, next to the Maribyrnong River. The area was first used for horse racing in March 1840. Redelva
Redelva was a notable Australian thoroughbred racehorse. A chestnut son of Romantic Hope from the mare Delvena, he was foaled in 1983 and was trained throughout his career by Greg Varcoe. Redelva competed primarily in sprint races winning up to a distance of 1400m. He was a durable horse winning quality races at the highest level as a two-year-old right through to the age of eight. Schillaci (horse)
Schillaci (1988–2001) was an Australian Thoroughbred racehorse who was an eight-time Group One winner. He was by Salieri (USA) out of Biscarina (Biscay-Forina). Background A huge grey gelding, Schillaci was a $70,000 purchase at the 1990 yearling sales, and was named after Salvatore Schillaci, who was the leading goal scorer at the 1990 World Cup. In something of a fashion at the time, another grey gelding, Baggio, was named after one of Schillaci's teammates, Roberto Baggio, and was a consistent stakes performer in Brisbane. Racing career Schillaci was unraced at two, and made his debut in a Kyneton maiden on 22 October 1991, where he defeated Mavournae, who, like Schillaci, would go on to win the Rubiton Stakes. Hareeba
Hareeba (1990–1997) was an Australian Thoroughbred racehorse who won six Black Type races including two Group One (G1) sprints in the 1990s. He was a bay gelding sired by Al Hareb (won GB William Hill Futurity Stakes) out of Headford Lass (GB) (Red Alert (IRE)-Deep Company (GB)). Racing career Hareeba had three starts as a two-year-old without success but returned at three, and, after two further defeats, broke his maiden at Yarra Glen on 28 October 1993. This was followed with wins at Ballarat, Moonee Valley, and Flemington. In his two city wins, he broke the course record for 1,200 metres in winning by nine lengths at Moonee Valley, and defeated the following year's Caulfield Cup winner, Paris Lane, by three lengths at Flemington. All Our Mob
All Our Mob (foaled 1989) was an Australian Thoroughbred racehorse who was a four-time Group One winner. He was by What A Guest (IRE) out of All Sold (Northern Spring (IRE)-Tickets). All Our Mob, who had always shown plenty of speed but a tendency to wilt over the closing stages, blossomed in the latter half of his four-year-old season, in the autumn of 1994. This campaign featured a number of placings in high-class company, including the Doomben 10,000, and culminated with his first Group One win, in the Stradbroke Handicap. The then Federal Opposition Leader, Alexander Downer, tipped All Our Mob in the race, and explained that winning was what 'All our mob is going to do' against ‘ Mr Keating’ at the next election. El Segundo (horse)
El Segundo (foaled 11 September 2001 in New Zealand) is a retired Thoroughbred racehorse. He is a bay son of Pins from the mare Palos Verdes by Flying Spur. Foaled in 2001 at Ancroft Stud, Matamata, New Zealand he was sold as a yearling for $140,000 and has spent his entire racing career in Australia under the care of trainer Colin Little. Amongst his major wins are the 2007 W. S. Cox Plate, 2007 MRC C F Orr Stakes, 2006 MRC Underwood Stakes and the 2005 Yalumba Stakes. Aided by his victory in the W. S. Black Caviar (foaled 18 August 2006) is a champion Australian Thoroughbred racehorse who was undefeated in 25 races, including 15 Group Ones, an Australian record. She was the 2010, 2011, 2012, and 2013 WTRR World Champion Sprinter. Black Caviar was trained by Melbourne-based trainer Peter Moody. Other than in her first two runs and in one race in 2010, she was ridden by Luke Nolen. The mare was retired on 17 April 2013. According to an ABC Catalyst episode from 2015, she was never whipped. Streets Of Avalon (foaled 9 October 2014) is a multiple Group 1 winning Australian thoroughbred racehorse. Background Streets Of Avalon was sired by Magnus, who won the Group 1 Galaxy. He was offered for sale at the Inglis yearling sales, however was withdrawn and retained by his breeder. Racing career Streets of Avalon first raced as a late autumn 2 year old, but didn’t win until his 7th start in a 3 year old maiden at Bairnsdale, Victoria.
