Australia Party
The Australia Party was a minor political party established initially in 1966 as the Liberal Reform Group. As the Australia Party, it became influential, particularly in the landmark 1972 federal election when its preferences assisted the Australian Labor Party to victory—ending 23 years of Liberal/Country Coalition government. The Australia Party grew out of the Liberal Reform Group, a group of members of the Liberal Party of Australia and Independents who opposed the party's policy of conscription and military involvement in the Vietnam War. The leading figure in this group was a businessman, Gordon Barton, who was assisted in the funding by Ken Thomas of TNT Transport and with the party organisation and branch establishment by Nick Gorshenin, Sydney shark meshing contractor and North Sydney Council alderman. Reg Turnbull
Reginald John David "Spot" Turnbull (21 February 1908 – 17 July 2006) was an Australian politician. He was a member of the Tasmanian House of Assembly from 1946 to 1961 (1946–1959 for the Labor Party, 1959–1961 as an Independent), then a Senator for Tasmania from 1962 until 1974. Nick Gorshenin
Nicholas Gorshenin (25 October 1922 – 9 October 2005) was a shark meshing contractor, North Sydney Council alderman and one of the founders of the Liberal Reform Group, which became the Australia Party. The preferences from the Australia Party in the 1972 elections assisted the Australian Labor Party under Gough Whitlam bring to an end 23 years of Liberal Country Party rule. The Australia Party later merged with Democrats to become the Australian Democrats. Early life Gorshenin was born in Vladivostok, Russia, the fourth child and eldest son of five children from Nickolai Gorshenin, who was a Colonel in the Imperial Russian Army, and Anastasia Gorshenin (née Branski). 1977 Australian Federal Election
The 1977 Australian federal election was held in Australia on 10 December 1977. All 124 seats in the House of Representatives and 34 of the 64 seats in the Senate were up for election. The incumbent Liberal- National Country Coalition led by Malcolm Fraser, in government since 1975, was elected to a second term over the opposition Labor Party led by Gough Whitlam. While the Coalition suffered a five-seat swing, it still had a substantial 48-seat majority in the House. The Liberals retained an outright majority, with 67 seats. Although Fraser thus had no need for the support of the National Country Party, the Coalition was retained. Whitlam became the first and only person to contest four federal elections as Leader of the Opposition. New LM
The New Liberal Movement (New LM) was a South Australian political party which existed from 1976 to 1977, with one member of parliament. In 1976 the Liberal Movement dissolved and three of its four parliamentary members rejoined the Liberal Party. However the remaining member, Robin Millhouse, argued that the South Australian Division of the Liberal Party of Australia was no longer worthy of the descriptor ''liberal'', and instead founded the New LM in May 1976. Millhouse kept a high profile for the New LM until the party merged with the Australia Party to form the Australian Democrats in 1977, thus causing it to cease to exist. The Democratic Labour Party (DLP), formerly the Democratic Labor Party, is an Australian political party. 1975 Australian Federal Election
The 1975 Australian federal election was held in Australia on 13 December 1975. All 127 seats in the House of Representatives and all 64 seats in the Senate were up for election, due to a double dissolution. Malcolm Fraser had been commissioned as caretaker prime minister following the dismissal of Gough Whitlam's three-year-old Labor government by Governor-General Sir John Kerr, on 11 November 1975.
