Austin Levi Fraser
Austin Levi Fraser (March 17, 1868 – April 22, 1946) was a Canadian lawyer, judge and political figure on Prince Edward Island. He represented 1st Kings in the Legislative Assembly of Prince Edward Island from 1904 to 1908 and King's in the House of Commons of Canada from 1908 to 1911 as a Conservative member. He was born in Vernon River, Prince Edward Island, the son of Edward F. Fraser and Florence MacIsaac, and was educated at Prince of Wales College and Saint Dunstan's College. He taught school for several years, then studied law in the office of Francis Haszard and was admitted to the bar in 1900. In 1901, he married Maud Adelaide Moar and set up practice in Souris. Fraser resigned his seat in the provincial assembly in 1908 to run for a seat in the House of Commons. Francis Haszard
Francis Longworth Haszard (November 20, 1849 – July 25, 1938) was a Prince Edward Island politician and jurist, the tenth premier of Prince Edward Island. Haszard's family had been United Empire Loyalists moving to PEI from the United States after the American Revolution. Longworth was born at Bellevue, Lot 49, Prince Edward Island. He studied law, was called to the bar in 1872 and set up practice in Charlottetown. He had been a magistrate in Charlottetown before being elected to the provincial legislature for the first time in 1904 as a Liberal. In 1908, he was asked by the lieutenant governor to become premier after the death of Arthur Peters. The Liberals had been in power since 1891 and their majority in the legislature had eroded over time. Kings County, Prince Edward Island
Kings County (2021 population 18,327) is located in eastern Prince Edward Island, Canada. It is the province's smallest, most rural and least-populated county. Kings County is also least dependent upon the agriculture industry compared with the other two counties, while being more heavily dependent on the fishery and forest industry. Comparatively large parts of the county are still forested and it hosts the province's largest sawmill. The only heavy industry, aside from forestry and industrial farming, is a small shipyard, although secondary manufacturing has been established in recent years. The county was named by Capt. Samuel Holland in 1765 for King George III (1738–1820). As such, Kings County's shire town is Georgetown. The largest community within the town of Three Rivers. James Joseph Hughes
James Joseph Hughes (August 15, 1856 – March 5, 1941) was a Canadian politician. Born in St. Mary's Road, Prince Edward Island, Hughes was the son of Irish parents. He was educated at the Log School House in St. Mary's Road and was a graduate of St. Dunstan's College in Charlottetown. A merchant, he was first elected to the House of Commons of Canada for the electoral district of King's in the general elections of 1900. A Liberal, he was re-elected in 1904 but was defeated in 1908. He was elected again in 1911 and was defeated in 1917. He was elected again in 1921. In 1925, he was summoned the Senate of Canada representing the senatorial division of King's, Prince Edward Island on the advice of Prime Minister Mackenzie King. He served until his death in 1941. His son, William Hughes was a cabinet minister on PEI. Souris, Prince Edward Island
Souris is a town in Kings County, Prince Edward Island, Canada. It is located near the northeastern tip of the province. History Souris was founded by Acadians in 1727 as a fishing settlement at the mouth of the Souris River. These early settlers experienced several plagues of field mice in the surrounding area during the 1720s-1760s which damaged crops. Souris is French for "mouse" and a mouse is the Town's Mascot. It is said that "a French vessel passing by the bay in the early 1700s was forced to cut through the waves of drowned mice and so gave the name to the area. The 1744 map of Sieur de la Roque names the bay, Havre a la Souris”. Earlier names also included: Colville Bay, Grand Haven, New Bristol, and Red Cliffs. The name likely also shares similar roots with the Souriquois and the Souris River. St. Dunstan's University (SDU) is a former university which was located on the northern outskirts of Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, Canada. SDU merged with Prince of Wales College (PWC) in 1969 to form the University of Prince Edward Island. St. Dunstan's College was founded by the Roman Catholic Diocese of Charlottetown on January 15, 1855 as a seminary which trained young men for the Catholic clergy. The St. Andrew's College, founded in 1831, was its predecessor. By the mid-20th century, the college had expanded into a small liberal arts university. Prince Of Wales College
Prince of Wales College (PWC) is a former university college, which was located in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, Canada. PWC merged with St. Dunstan's University in 1969 to form the University of Prince Edward Island. PWC traces its history to 1804 when land was set aside by Lieutenant-Governor Edmund Fanning for a college - the colony's first. In 1821 a district school called the National School opened on the site located on Kent Street in the east end of Charlottetown. In 1835 Central Academy opened on a site along Grafton Street, immediately south of the National School. The National School closed in the early 1850s and the provincial Normal School for training teachers opened on the site in 1856. In 1860 the Central Academy was upgraded and renamed Prince of Wales College (PWC) in honour of a visit to the colony that year by the Prince of Wales, later to become King Edward VII.
