Augustus O. Bourn
Augustus Osborn Bourn (October 1, 1834January 29, 1925) was an American politician and the 36th Governor of Rhode Island. Early life Bourn was born in Providence, Rhode Island, on October 1, 1834. He was the son of George O. Bourn and Huldah B. (Eddy) Bourn and married Elizabeth R. Morrill February 24, 1863. He and his wife had five children. He graduated from Brown University and later established a successful career in rubber business, where he started in his father's company. He continued the business after his father's death and incorporated it as the Providence Rubber Company. He also founded the National Rubber Company, which later merged with the former company. Military service During the Civil War, Bourne enlisted in the Rhode Island Militia but did not see active service with the Union Army. Oscar Rathbun
Oscar Jenckes Rathbun (March 12, 1832 – February 1, 1892) was an American businessman and politician, serving as the Lieutenant Governor of Rhode Island from 1883 to 1885. Early life Rathbun was born on March 12, 1832, a son of Aaron and Julia (Jenckes) Rathbun. He attended Worcester High School in Massachusetts and the Clinton Liberal Institute in New York. He then worked in his father's goods store. After his father's death, he left to work in the banking industry. He was a teller at Woonsocket Falls National Bank and then at Citizens' National Bank. By 1860, he was also Treasurer at the Citizens' Savings Bank . However, he only saw the banking industry as a stepping stone to making a career as an entrepreneur. From 1860, he worked in the clothing industry. He became president of Harris Woolen Company and the Household Sewing Machine Company and the Woonsocket Streetcar Company. James Renwick, Jr
James Renwick Jr. (born November 11, 1818, Bloomingdale, in Upper Manhattan, New York City – June 23, 1895, New York City) was an American architect in the 19th century. ''The Encyclopedia of American Architecture'' calls him "one of the most successful American architects of his time". Life and work Renwick was born into a wealthy and well-educated family. His mother, Margaret Brevoort, was from a wealthy and socially prominent New York family. His father, James Renwick, was an engineer, architect, and professor of natural philosophy at Columbia College, now Columbia University. His two brothers were also engineers. Renwick is buried in Green-Wood Cemetery in Brooklyn, New York, with his wife and father. Renwick was not formally trained as an architect. Benjamin Harrison
Benjamin Harrison (August 20, 1833March 13, 1901) was an American lawyer and politician who served as the 23rd president of the United States from 1889 to 1893. He was a member of the Harrison family of Virginia–a grandson of the ninth president, William Henry Harrison, and a great-grandson of Benjamin Harrison V, a founding father. Harrison was born on a farm by the Ohio River and graduated from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. After moving to Indianapolis, he established himself as a prominent local attorney, Presbyterian church leader, and politician in Indiana. During the American Civil War, he served in the Union Army as a colonel, and was confirmed by the U.S. Senate as a brevet brigadier general of volunteers in 1865. Nathanael Greene Herreshoff
Nathanael Greene Herreshoff (March 18, 1848 – June 2, 1938) was an American naval architect, mechanical engineer, and yacht design innovator. He produced a succession of undefeated America's Cup defenders between 1893 and 1920. Biography Herreshoff was born on March 18, 1848, in Bristol, Rhode Island and was named after General Nathanael Greene. He was one of seven brothers. He graduated from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1870 with a three-year degree in mechanical engineering. After graduation, he took a position with the Corliss Steam Engine Company in Providence, Rhode Island. At the 1876 Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, he oversaw operation of the Corliss Stationary Engine, a , dynamo that powered the exhibition's machinery.
