Augustus E. Thomas
Augustus Thomas (January 8, 1857 – August 12, 1934) was an American playwright. Biography Born in St. Louis, Missouri and son of a doctor, Thomas worked a number of jobs including as a page in the 41st Congress, studying law, and gaining some practical railway work experience before he turned to journalism and became editor of the Kansas City ''Mirror'' in 1889. Thomas had been writing since his teens when he wrote plays and even organized a small theatrical touring company. Thomas was hired to work as an assistant at Pope's Theatre in St. Louis. During this time, he wrote a one-act play called ''Editha's Burglar'', based on a short story by Frances Hodgson Burnett called ''The Burglar''. After touring in the play, he expanded the show to four acts, renamed it ''The Burglar'', and was able to get Maurice Barrymore to play the title role. The Jungle (1914 Film)
''The Jungle'' (1914) is an American drama silent film made by the All-Star Feature Corporation starring George Nash. The film is an adaptation of the 1906 book of the same name by Upton Sinclair, the only one to date. Sinclair reportedly bought the negative of the film prior to 1916, hoping to market the film nationally after its initial release in 1914. Sinclair himself reportedly appears at the beginning and end of the movie, as a sort of endorsement of the film. The film, from historical accounts at the time of release, included the scene of Jurgis murdering the foreman who raped Jurgis's wife by throwing him over a walkway into a "sea of frightful horns passing beneath him" (cattle). The film was commonly screened at socialist meetings across America at the time. It is now considered a lost film. ''Arizona'' is a 1931 American pre-Code drama film directed by George B. Seitz and starring Laura La Plante, John Wayne and June Clyde. It is one of several films based on Augustus Thomas's 1899 play of the same name. Filmed as "Arizona", the movie's makers applied to the New York State Censor Board for a new title, "Men Are Like That", and the film was released and reviewed under that title in New York and elsewhere.
