Augusto Barros Ferreira
Augusto Barros Ferreira, better known as Augusto Barros, and simply Barros, is a Portuguese painter born on August 7, 1929, in Lisbon ( Portugal), and dead on February 10, 1998, in Lisbon. Abstractionist painter, and emblematic figure of the Parisian district of Saint-Germain-des-Prés of the 1970s. Biography Childhood and beginnings in Portugal Augusto Barros is painting since the age of 10. His parents have a neighbor painter, which clearly sparked him an early interest in painting. As a teenager, he often likes to go for a stroll at the Port of Lisbon, and contemplate the ocean. He sets himself the goal of going to the American continent, and for that purpose he learns English, on his own, through books and thanks to the travelers he meets at the port (so that at the age of 29, he was one of the interpreters of Queen Elizabeth II, visiting Portugal in 1957). Serge Poliakoff (January 8, 1900 – October 12, 1969) was a Russian-born French modernist painter belonging to the 'New' Ecole de Paris (Tachisme). Biography Serge Poliakoff was born in Moscow in 1900, the thirteenth of fourteen children. His father, a Kyrgyz, supplied the army with horses that he bred himself and also owned a racing stable. His mother was heavily involved with the church, and its religious icons fascinated him. He enrolled at the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture, but fled Russia in 1918. He arrived in Constantinople in 1920, living off the profits from his talent as a guitarist. He went on to pass through Sofia, Belgrade, Vienna, and Berlin before settling in Paris in 1923, all the while continuing to play in Russian cabarets. Camille Bryen, also known as Camille Briand, (September 17, 1907– August 5, 1977) was a French poet, painter and engraver. Associated with the School of Paris, his work plays a part in the history of lyrical abstraction and tachisme. Sonia Delaunay (13 November 1885 – 5 December 1979) was a French artist, who spent most of her working life in Paris. Max Ernst (2 April 1891 – 1 April 1976) was a German (naturalised American in 1948 and French in 1958) painter, sculptor, printmaker, graphic artist, and poet. Émile Gilioli (b. Paris, 10 June 1911, d. Paris, 19 January 1977), was a French-Italian sculptor. Gilioli was one of the representatives of abstract French sculpture in the 1950s. Biography Émile Gilioli was born to a family of Italian shoemakers who had settled beside the Canal Saint-Martin. After the First World War, the family moved back towards Italy, settling in Nice.
