Augustiner-Keller
Augustiner-Keller is a traditional restaurant and beer garden in the Maxvorstadt district of Munich, Germany. The restaurant was opened in the first half of the 19th century and is one of the most popular beer gardens in Munich. Augustiner-Keller at Arnulfstraße 52 sells beer by Augustiner-Bräu, the oldest brewery in Munich. History The restaurant was first mentioned as a beer storehouse in a 1812 city plan of Munich. This storehouse belonged to the Büchl-Brauerei brewery which no longer exists. The 1842 city plan designated a beer garden selling food and drinks at the street known as Salzstraße at the time. Although the beer garden was situated next to the old Munich execution grounds on the Marsfeld, it was seen as one of the most beautiful parts of the city. Augustiner-Bräu
Augustiner-Bräu is a brewery in Munich, Germany. Established in 1328, it is Munich's oldest independent brewery. The company is owned by the Edith Haberland Wagner Trust 51% and the Inselkammer-Family 49%. History The Augustiner Brewery was first mentioned by name in 1328, established within an Augustianian Monastery which had been settled just outside the Munich city walls in an area called Haberfeld (or Haferfeld – "oat field") in 1294. The Monastery complex was the largest sacred building in Munich until the completion of the Frauenkirche cathedral in 1494. The Augustinian monks supplied beer to the Bavarian Royal Wittelsbach family until 1589, at which time the Hofbräu brewery was founded. In 1759, the Augustinian Monks of Munich were among the first members of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences and Humanities. Arnulfstraße
The Arnulfstraße is a 3.8 km long urban street in Munich. It leads from the Bahnhofplatz in the Ludwigsvorstadt through the Maxvorstadt (north of the railway) west to Romanplatz in Neuhausen. Over the Hackerbrücke, there is a connection to the Landsberger Straße The Landsberger Straße is one of the main arterial roads in Munich. A beer garden (German: ''Biergarten'') is an outdoor area in which beer and food are served, typically at shared tables shaded by trees. Beer gardens originated in Bavaria, of which Munich is the capital city, in the 19th century, and remain common in Southern Germany. They are usually attached to a brewery, beer hall, pub, or restaurant. History Facilities of this kind existed for example in Bamberg since 1605 under the German term "Bierkeller" ("Beer cellars"). At that time, the Archdiocese of Bamberg was directly subordinated to Rome and not yet to the Duchy of Bavaria. Hence, the first "Biergarten" in the strict sense of the term and of the decree of 1812 by the Kingdom of Bavaria developed at the beginning of 19th century in Munich. Theodor Georg Knorr (October 19, 1859 – April 15, 1911) was an engineer and entrepreneur on the field of railroad technology and founder of the company Knorr-Bremse. He is particularly remembered for his role in the development of the compressed air brake. Life and work After studies in mechanical engineering, Georg Knorr worked at Krefeld's railroad administration. In 1884 he joined the Berlin branch of the American engineer Jesse Fairfield Carpenter's enterprise (at ''Schöneberger Ufer 17'' in Berlin Zoologischer Garten), which promoted the introduction to the German market of the bicameral air brake produced by Carpenter. In 1893 Knorr took over the company "Carpenter & Schulze", transferred the production to Berlin-Britz and in 1900 he even developed a new brake, "Knorr's single chamber express brake".
