Auguste Daum
Jean Louis Auguste Daum (1853 in Bitche – 1909 in Nancy) was a French ceramist, in glass. He was one of the founder members of École de Nancy and the director of Daum studio. He was the son of Jean Daum, brother of Antonin Daum and father of Léon Daum Léon Daum (21 March 1887 – 28 May 1966) was a French mining engineer, company director and senior European administrator. Bitche
Bitche ( , ; German and Lorraine Franconian: ) is a Communes of France, commune in the Moselle (department), Moselle Departments of France, department, administrative regions of France, administrative region of Grand Est, northeastern France. It is the Pays de Bitche's capital city and the seat of the Canton of Bitche and the communauté de communes du Pays de Bitche. École De Nancy
École de Nancy, or the Nancy School, was a group of Art Nouveau artisans and designers working in Nancy, France between 1890 and 1914. Major figures included the furniture designer Louis Majorelle, ebonist and glass artist Jacques Grüber, the glass and furniture designer Émile Gallé, and the crystal manufactory of Daum. Their work was largely inspired by floral and vegetal forms found in the region. The goal of the group was to produce in series ordinary objects, such as furniture, glassware, and pottery, with fine craftsmanship and in original forms, making art objects available for people's homes. Daum (studio)
Daum is a crystal studio based in Nancy, France, founded in 1878 by Jean Daum (1825–1885). His sons, Auguste Daum (1853–1909) and Antonin Daum (1864–1931), oversaw its growth during the burgeoning Art Nouveau period. Currently Daum is the only commercial crystal manufacturer employing the pâte de verre (glass paste) process for art glass and crystal sculptures, a technique in which crushed glass is packed into a refractory mould and then fused in a kiln. History The Daum family worked at the beginning of the Art Nouveau era and created one of France's most prominent glassworks. Established at the end of the 19th century, Daum’s renown was originally linked to the École de Nancy and the art of ''pâte-de-cristal'', a major contributing factor in terms of its worldwide reputation. Léon Daum
Léon Daum (21 March 1887 – 28 May 1966) was a French mining engineer, company director and senior European administrator. He was a member of the High Authority of the European Coal and Steel Community from 1952 to 1959. Origins Léon Daum's grandfather was Jean Daum (1825–85), a notary in Bitche who settled in Nancy in 1871. Jean Daum became a master glass maker in 1876, and from 1878 was the owner of the Fonderies de Nancy. Léon's parents were Jean Louis Auguste Daum (1853–1909) and Jeanne Constantin (d. 1921). Auguste Daum started as a notary's clerk but in 1885 joined Jean Daum in managing the glass factory. Auguste Daum became president of the Nancy Commercial Court in 1904. Léon's brother Antonin Jean Daum (1864–1930) trained as an engineer at the École Centrale, took over technical direction of the Daum company and then headed the company after Auguste Daum died in 1909.
