August Prize
The August Prize ( sv, Augustpriset) is an annual Swedish literary prize awarded each year since 1989 by the Swedish Publishers' Association. The prize is awarded to the best Swedish book of the year, in three categories. Prize In the years 1989-1992, the prize was awarded in one general category. Since 1992, the prize has been awarded in the categories Fiction, Non-Fiction, and Children's and Youth Literature. The prize is named after the writer August Strindberg. Selection All Swedish publishers may submit nominations for the award. In each category, a jury shortlists six titles each. These titles are then read and voted on by an assembly of 63 electors, 21 in each category. The electors come from across the country, and comprise booksellers, librarians and literary critics. The books receiving the largest number of votes in each category win the prize. The prizes are handed out at a gala in Stockholm. Sven Delblanc
Sven Delblanc ( May 26, 1931 - December 15, 1992) was Swedish author and professor of literature. Born in Swan River, Manitoba, Canada, Deblanc died in Gottsunda Parish, Uppsala, and is buried in Hammarby kyrkogård in Uppsala, Sweden. Delblanc was an Associate Professor in the history of literature at Uppsala University since 1965. He received the Aftonbladet Literature Prize in 1965. Before his death he was pointed out as the anonymous writer Bo Balderson. He was born in Canada but grew up near Vagnhärad, Sweden. Sven Lindqvist
Sven Oskar Lindqvist (28 March 1932 – 14 May 2019) was a prolific Swedish author whose 35 books range from essays, aphorisms, autobiography, and documentary prose to travel and reportage. He was educated at Stockholm University, and spent a year as a cultural attaché in Beijing, but spent most of his life as a writer, known for his persistence and independence. In the 1970s he established the public history movement Dig Where You Stand. From the late 1980s he focused on European imperialism, colonialism, racism, genocide, environmental degradation, and war. Among his best-known and most widely admired works are his 1996 discussion of racism, ''Exterminate All the Brutes'', based on a phrase in Joseph Conrad's '' Heart of Darkness'', and his 2001 ''A History of Bombing'', an intentionally fractured narrative written in 399 short chapters. Peter Kihlgård
Peter Kihlgård, born 10 April 1954 in Örebro, is a Swedish author, playwright and translator. Kihlgård works across literary genres with a variety of artistic expressions. He is the author of acclaimed novels such as (1988), the semi-autobiographical (1992), the experimental (1996) and the popular love story (2007), as well as of plays, prose poetry and short stories. Tua Forsström
Tua Birgitta Forsström (born 2 April 1947) is a Finland-Swedish writer who writes in Swedish. She was awarded the Nordic Council Literature Prize in 1998 for the poetry collection '' Efter att ha tillbringat en natt bland hästar''. Forsström's work is known for its engagement with the Finnish landscape, travel and conflicts within relationships. She often uses quotations in her work, sometimes placing them directly into her poems and at other times using them as introductions or interludes in her sequences. She has used quotations from Egon Friedell, Ludwig Wittgenstein, Hermann Hesse and Friedrich Nietszche. In the collection ''After Spending a Night Among Horses'' () (1997) Forsström uses quotations from the Andrei Tarkovsky film '' Stalker'', they are placed as interludes in a sequence of pieces and sit alone on the page, without direct reference to their source on the page, leaving this to a Notes & Quotations section at the end of the book. Sigrid Combüchen
Sigrid Combüchen (born 16 January 1942) is a Swedish novelist, essayist, literary critic and journalist. Career Sigrid Combüchen was born in Solingen, Germany in the Ruhr territory. Shortly after the War her family moved to Sweden. Sigrid Combüchen made her debut at the age of eighteen with the novel (1960). She worked in journalism and on her academic degree before she returned to fiction seventeen years later with the novel (In Northern Europe) and then (Warmth) in 1980. Her first internationally renowned novel is ''Byron'', published in 1988. The book paints a picture of the English poet through a compositional change between present and past, where Byron is partly illustrated by a group of Byron enthusiasts of today and partly through the environment in his own time. Niklas Rådström
Niklas Rådström (born 12 April 1953) is one of Sweden's most noted and prolific contemporary poets, novelists and playwrights. He is the son of the author Pär Rådström and theater director Anne Marie Rådström. Poetry Rådström made his debut as a poet in 1975 and made a major breakthrough in 1979 with the poetry collection ''Poems about the life of Sandro della Quercia'', a lyrical biography of a fictional Renaissance artist. During the following decade, he consolidated his position as one of the leading poets of his generation with collections such as ''The Shadow'', ''The Temptations of Saint Anthony'', ''The Living'' and ''Blockhead''. Göran Sonnevi
Göran Sonnevi (born 3 October 1939 in Lund, Skåne County) is a Swedish poet and translator. Sonnevi grew up in Halmstad; he studied literature and linguistics at the University of Lund, also getting librarian training. For many years he has lived in Järfälla outside Stockholm. Sonnevi is one of the most esteemed poets of modern Sweden and is known as well as a successful and conscientious translator (e.g. of Osip Mandelstam, Ezra Pound and Friedrich Hölderlin). Per Olov Enquist
Per Olov Enquist, also known as P. O. Enquist, (23 September 1934 – 25 April 2020) was a Swedish author. He had worked as a journalist, playwright and novelist. Biography Enquist was born and raised in , a village in present-day Skellefteå Municipality, Västerbotten. He was the only son of a single mother, who became a widow when he was half a year old. In his youth, he was a promising athlete with a high jump personal best of 1.97 meters. He studied at Uppsala University, receiving a degree in the history of literature. During his time in Uppsala he started writing, his first novel ''Kristallögat'' being published in 1961, and became a newspaper journalist. Katarina Frostenson
Alma Katarina Frostenson Arnault (born 5 March 1953) is a Swedish poet and writer. She was a member of the Swedish Academy from 1992 to 2019. In 2003, Frostenson was made a Chevalier of the Legion of Honour in France in recognition of her services to literature.
