Aughawillan GAA
Aughawillan GAA is a Gaelic Athletic Association Gaelic football club in Lower Drumreilly parish, County Leitrim, Ireland. Grounds Aughawillan is located near the County Cavan border, northeast of Ballinamore. History Aughawillan claim their origins from the Rory O'Donnells club which played in 1890. A team from the locality played under the names Kiltyhugh and Lower Drumreilly, winning the 1923 Leitrim Senior Football Championship. A ladies' Gaelic football club was founded in the 1970s and has won nineteen county championships. The current grounds opened in 1982. Aughawillan have won 12 senior football county titles and have reached the final of the Connacht Senior Club Football Championship on two occasions, in 1992 and 1994. Gaelic football ( ga, Peil Ghaelach; short name '), commonly known as simply Gaelic, GAA or Football is an Irish team sport. It is played between two teams of 15 players on a rectangular grass pitch. The objective of the sport is to score by kicking or punching the ball into the other team's goals (3 points) or between two upright posts above the goals and over a crossbar above the ground (1 point). Players advance the football up the field with a combination of carrying, bouncing, kicking, hand-passing, and soloing (dropping the ball and then toe-kicking the ball upward into the hands). In the game, two types of scores are possible: points and goals. A point is awarded for kicking or hand-passing the ball over the crossbar , signalled by the umpire raising a white flag. Drumreilly
Drumreilly civil parish is situated partly in the baronies of Carrigallen and Dromahaire, County Leitrim and partly in the barony of Tullyhaw, County Cavan, Ireland. Etymology The name of the parish derives from Drumreilly townland in the parish, which is an Anglicisation of the Gaelic ''Druim Air Belaigh'' meaning 'The Hill-Ridge of the Eastern Road'. The earliest surviving reference to the name is c.800 in the Martyrology of Tallaght, where it is spelled ''Dromma Airbelaig''. History The parish is in an area originally called Cenel Luacháin inhabited from early times by the Conmhaícne tribe. County Leitrim ( ; gle, Contae Liatroma) is a county in Ireland. It is in the province of Connacht and is part of the Northern and Western Region. It is named after the village of Leitrim. Ballinamore
Ballinamore (, meaning "mouth of the big ford") is a small town in County Leitrim, Ireland. Etymology , corrupted ''Bellanamore'', means "town at the mouth of the big ford", so named because it was a main crossing (ford) of the Yellow River. The gaels called the baile Átha na Chuirre ("homestead of ford of the afflictions") because a hospital-house stood near the bridge in the 13th century. Leitrim Senior Football Championship
The Leitrim Senior Football Championship is an annual football competition contested by top-tier Leitrim GAA clubs. The Leitrim County Board of the Gaelic Athletic Association has organised it since 1890. St Mary's, Kiltoghert are the title holders (2022) defeating Mohill in the Final. Ladies' Gaelic Football
Ladies' Gaelic football ( ga, Peil Ghaelach na mBan) is a women's team sport. It is the women's equivalent of Gaelic football. Ladies' football is organised by the Ladies' Gaelic Football Association. Two teams of 15 players kick or hand-pass a round ball towards goals at each end of a grass pitch, since May 2022 women Gaelic footballers have to wear shin pads. The sport is mainly played in the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland, where the two main competitions are the All-Ireland Senior Ladies' Football Championship and the Ladies' National Football League. Mickey Quinn
Mickey Quinn is a former Gaelic footballer from County Leitrim, Ireland. Along with Seamus Quinn he is the only other Leitrim man to win an All Star award, he is also one of the finest Gaelic footballers Leitrim ever produced, Quinn won an All Star at Midfield in 1990 and at the time was only the second player to have never played in Croke Park to win one. In 1994 he was part of the county's memorable Connacht Senior Football Championship victory. He also won an All Ireland B Titles in 1990. Declan Darcy
Declan Darcy (Irish: ''Déaglán Ó Dorchaí'') is a former Gaelic footballer who played for the Leitrim and Dublin county teams. He captained Leitrim to the 1994 Connacht Senior Football Championship, he also won a Connacht Under-21 Football Championship in 1991. He won Leitrim Senior Football Championship titles in 1989, 1992, 1993, 1994 with Aughawillian and also played with St. Brigids GAA Club in Dublin. He won a Dublin Senior Club Championship and Leinster Senior Club Championship with St. Brigids in 2003. He served as a selector of the Dublin under-21 football team for the 2009 championship season. Darcy also helped manage St Brigid's minor team, alongside Gerry McEntee, Liam Plunkett and Mick Clerkin, to Minor 'A' Championship glory in 2008, winning both Dublin and Leinster titles.
