Atys Of Lydia
Atys (Ancient Greek: Ἄτυς) is a legendary figure of the 2nd millennium BC who is attested by Herodotus to have been an early king of Lydia, then probably known as Maeonia. He was the son of Manes and the father of Lydus, after whom the Lydian people were later named. Herodotus recounts that Maeonia was beset by severe famine during Atys' reign. To help them endure hunger, the Maeonians developed various expedients including dice, knucklebones and ball games. The idea was that they would eat every other day only. On the interim days when they fasted, they would play games all day to distract their minds from hunger. Herodotus says they lived like that for eighteen years. Eventually, Atys decided to halve the population, one half to remain in Maeonia and the other half to leave and found a colony elsewhere. Atys (son Of Croesus)
Atys ( el, Ἄτυς) was the son of Croesus king of Lydia. He had one son named Pythius.from Herodotus, 7.27. According to Hdt. 1.35-45 (1, 35 to 45 of the '' Histories'' by Herodotus), Atys's father king Croesus had a dream, in which he saw his son Atys killed by a spear. As a result Croesus, seeking to prevent or stave off the foreseen fate, had his son married immediately and ceased sending him out to war. One day a giant boar began terrorizing Mysian Olympus, and the Mysians sent to Croesus seeking relief. Croesus initially was unwilling to allow Atys to participate, but Atys talked his father into letting him go with a team of chosen young men and hounds to drive it off, arguing that boars do not wield iron weapons. Croesus gave his consent, but he sent Adrastus with him as a body guard. During the hunt, Adrastus accidentally killed Atys when hurling a spear at the boar, thus Croesus's dream came to pass. Tantalus (son Of Broteas)
In Greek mythology, Tantalus (Ancient Greek: Τάνταλος ''Tántalos'') was a prince of south of Argolis as son of King Thyestes. He was the brother of Pleisthenes. An alternative genealogy makes him the son of Broteas. Tantalus and Pleisthenes were killed in revenge by their uncle Atreus, their father’s brother, after Thyestes seduced Aerope, wife of Atreus. The latter was a king of Mycenae. In some accounts, Tantalus was the first husband of Clytemnestra. ''Atys'' ('' Attis'') is a 1675 ''tragédie en musique'' — described in a 1708 revival as a ''tragédie mise en musique'' and today considered a ''tragédie lyrique'', a French form of opera — in a prologue and five acts by Jean-Baptiste Lully to a libretto by Philippe Quinault after Ovid's '' Fasti''. It was premiered for the royal court on 10 January the following year by Lully's Académie Royale de Musique (Paris Opera) at the Château de Saint-Germain-en-Laye. The first public performance took place in April 1676 at the Théâtre du Palais-Royal. Attis (; grc-gre, Ἄττις, also , , ) was the consort of Cybele, in Phrygian and Greek mythology. His priests were eunuchs, the ''Galli'', as explained by origin myths pertaining to Attis castrating himself. Attis was also a Phrygian vegetation deity. His self-mutilation, death, and resurrection represents the fruits of the earth, which die in winter only to rise again in the spring. According to Ovid's ''Metamorphoses'', Attis transformed himself into a pine tree. ''Atys'' is a genus of very small to medium-sized sea snails, marine opisthobranch gastropod mollusks in the family Haminoeidae. All the species within the genus Atys are herbivores. They occur in tropical and warm oceans and seas. They are cephalaspideans, part of the suborder of headshield slugs and bubble snails. The genus was named after Atys, a king of Alba Longa, who was mentioned in ancient Greek texts. Description These snails have a shell which is very lightweight and translucent, with a sunken spire. The shape of the shell in some species resembles a bubble, and because of this, species in this genus are commonly known as Atys bubble shells or Atys bubble snails. Atys (Piccinni)
''Atys'' is a tragédie lyrique in three acts by Niccolò Piccinni with a French libretto by Jean-François Marmontel. Marmontel's libretto was based upon Philippe Quinault's libretto for Jean-Baptiste Lully's 1676 opera of the same title. Quinault based his rendition on Ovid's ''Fasti''. Marmontel adapted Quinault's libretto and modified it by removing the prologue and divertissements. He also altered the plot; instead of using Ovid's metamorphic ending (which Quinault used), Atys commits suicide. Piccinni's opera was premiered by the Paris Opera at the second Salle du Palais-Royal on 22 February 1780. Musically the opera is admired for its fugal overture, the dream sequence in act 2, the long quartet at the dramatic climax, and the somber dirge with which it ends. In 1783 there was a second version of the opera produced by Piccinni and Marmontel.
