Athletics At The 2020 Summer Olympics – Men's Pole Vault
The men's pole vault event at the 2020 Summer Olympics took place between 31 July and 3 August 2021 at the Japan National Stadium. 29 athletes from 18 nations competed. Armand Duplantis of Sweden won gold, with Christopher Nilsen of the United States earning silver and Thiago Braz of Brazil taking bronze. It was Sweden's first victory in the event and first medal of any color in the men's pole vault since 1952. Braz, who had won in 2016, became the ninth man to earn multiple medals in the pole vault. Summary All of the 2016 podium returned to Tokyo; Thiago Braz da Silva, Renaud Lavillenie, and Sam Kendricks. Kendricks tested positive for COVID-19 after arriving in Tokyo and was not allowed to compete. But the old guard of the sport had been supplanted by a new phenom, Armand Duplantis, a 21 year old who had 18 years of vaulting experience, setting age group world records since the age of 7. The Japan National Stadium, officially named and formerly known as or , is a multi-purpose stadium used mostly for association football in Kasumigaoka, Shinjuku, Tokyo, Japan. Kurtis Marschall (born 25 April 1997) is an Australian pole vaulter, bronze medallist at the 2023 World Athletics Championships. Early years Marschall was born on 25 April 1997 in North Adelaide, South Australia. In 2008, as an 11-year-old, Marschall was inspired by Steve Hooker's gold medal win at the Olympic Games in Beijing. A year later he attended a ‘come-and-try' day in Adelaide where he jumped two metres. Marschall started training with Alan Launder and 4 years later was clearing five metres. Piotr Lisek (born 16 August 1992) is a Polish athlete specialising in the pole vault. He won bronze medals at the 2015 and 2019 World Championships and the silver medal at the 2017 World Championships. He is the first Polish vaulter to jump over 6 meters. His personal bests in the event are 6.02 metres outdoors (Monaco 2019) and 6.00 metres indoors (Potsdam 2017). Career Lisek began his career as a high jumper, but later switched to pole vault, having decided he was too short for his original event. He was coached by Vyacheslav Kalinichenko, who also trained Monika Pyrek, one of the most successful Polish female pole vaulters. At the 2012 Polish Championships, he tested positive for an illegal substance, methylhexanamine, and was banned for six months. The athlete stated that he took the substance unknowingly in an energy drink and even listed it with the supplements he was using before the anti-doping control, which contributed to the reduced period of suspension.
