Athletics At The 1984 Summer Olympics – Men's Marathon
The men's marathon at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, California, was held on Sunday August 12, 1984. The race started at 5:00 pm local time. There were 107 competitors from 59 countries. The maximum number of athletes per nation had been set at 3 since the 1930 Olympic Congress. A total number of 78 athletes completed the race. The race was won by Carlos Lopes of Portugal, giving Portugal its first ever Olympics gold medal, and Portugal's first medal in the men's marathon. His time of 2:09:21 was the Olympic record for the next 24 years. Ireland also won its first men's marathon medal, with John Treacy's silver. Great Britain returned to the podium for the first time since 1964 with Charlie Spedding taking bronze. Before its acquisition by Hearst, it was founded and published by Rodale, Inc. in Emmaus, Pennsylvania. Jerry Kiernan
Jeremiah Kiernan (31 May 1953 – 21 January 2021) was an Irish long-distance runner. Biography Kiernan was born in Listowel, County Kerry. He represented his native country at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, California, where he finished in ninth place in the men's marathon. His teammate, John Treacy, claimed silver in the same race. Kiernan twice won the Dublin Marathon, in 1982 and 1992. He also won the national cross country title in 1984. A former Irish record holder over 3000 metres, Kiernan was a sub-four-minute mile runner being the seventh Irish runner to break that barrier in June of 1976. Kiernan represented Ireland 17 times between 1975 and 1993, competing seven times in world cross-country championships, and won five Irish titles, from the 1,500m to the marathon, and also national inter-club and inter-county cross-country titles. Djama Robleh ( so, Jaamac Rooble) (born December 31, 1958) is a retired Djiboutian long-distance runner who specialized in the marathon race. He won the silver medal in this event at the 1982 African Championships and finished eighth in the marathon at the 1984 Summer Olympics. Joseph Nzau
Joseph Nzau (born April 14, 1949) is a Kenyan former long-distance runner who represented his country at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, California. Nzau won the 1983 Chicago Marathon and the inaugural 1990 Belgrade Marathon. Running career Early life Nzau was a late bloomer who did not take up running until the age of 25. He was subsequently recruited by the University of Wyoming on an athletic scholarship when he was 28, along with a few other Kenyans. Collegiate Nzau attended the University of Wyoming under the tutelage of Coach Ron Jones in the late 1970s. At the 1979 NCAA Division I Track and Field Championships, he finished in fifth place.
