Athletics At The 1962 British Empire And Commonwealth Games – Women's 880 Yards
The women's 880 yards at the 1962 British Empire and Commonwealth Games as part of the athletics programme was held at the Perry Lakes Stadium on Saturday 1 December 1962. After a 16-year absence, the event made its return to the women's program and was won by the world record holder, Australian Dixie Willis. Willis finished two seconds ahead of Marise Chamberlain from New Zealand and her fellow countrywoman Joy Jordan. The winning time of 2:03.7 easily accounted for the Games record set by Englishwoman Gladys Lunn in 1934, with all but last place finisher posting times inside the mark. Perry Lakes Stadium
Perry Lakes Stadium was a multi-purpose stadium adjacent to Perry Lakes Reserve, Perry Lakes in Floreat, Western Australia. It was built and funded by the State Government and the City of Perth in 1962 for the 1962 British Empire and Commonwealth Games and had a nominal capacity of 30,000. Many other events had been held at Perry Lakes Stadium over the years such as the sport of athletics, athletics, soccer and rugby football, rugby. It has been redeveloped into a residential site and the facility has been replaced by the Western Australian Athletics Stadium, which was constructed on the southern side of Underwood Avenue, which opened nearby in March 2009. Gladys Lunn
Gladys Anne Lunn (1 June 1908 – 3 January 1988) was an English track and field athlete from Birmingham, England who competed in the 1934 British Empire Games in the 1938 British Empire Games. Gladys was a member of Birchfield Harriers athletics club. At the 1934 Empire Games she won the gold medal in the 880 yards event as well as in the javelin throw competition, an unorthodox combination. Four years later she won the bronze medal in the javelin throw event at the 1938 Empire Games. She also participated in the 220 yards contest but did not start in her semi-final heat. She was the inaugural winner of the (unofficial) ladies race at the International Cross Country Championships. She was also twice a medallist in the 800 metres at the Women's World Games, taking gold in 1930 before returning for a bronze medal in 1934. The Commonwealth Games is a quadrennial event which began in 1930 as the British Empire Games.
