The women's 4 × 400 metres relay event at the 2020 Summer Olympics took place on 5 and 7 August 2021 at the Japan National Stadium. There were 16 competing relay teams, with each team having at least 5 members from which 4 were selected in each round. Summary This was the first year a team could run eight runners in the semis and finals. Essentially a deep team could run fresh runners in the semi and final. USA took advantage, doing exactly that, running the #3 through 6 finishers in the US Olympic Trials 400 m in the semi-final round. Kaylin Whitney, Wadeline Jonathas, Kendall Ellis and Lynna Irby combined to produce the fastest time in the semi-final round, more than a second faster than Jamaica, who also held two runners in reserve. Great Britain was the only other team to dare holding two in reserve, also qualifying with the fourth fastest time. Japan National Stadium
The Japan National Stadium, officially named and formerly known as or , is a multi-purpose stadium used mostly for association football in Kasumigaoka, Shinjuku, Tokyo, Japan. The facility served as the main stadium for the opening and closing ceremonies, as well as the venue for track and field athletics events at the 2020 Summer Olympics and 2020 Summer Paralympics in 2021. Demolition of the old National Stadium was completed in May 2015, allowing for the construction of the new stadium to begin on 11 December 2016. The original plans for the new stadium were scrapped in July 2015 by Japanese prime minister Shinzo Abe, who announced a rebid after a public outcry prompted by increased building costs. Candice McLeod
Candice McLeod (born 15 November 1996) is a Jamaican athlete, a finalist in the women's 400 metres races at the 2020 Olympic Games and the 2022 World Athletics Championships. Early and personal life McLeod attended Vere Technical High School where she was befriended and mentored by future athletics champion Shericka Jackson, before McLeod went on to become an accounting graduate from the University of West Indies. Career At the Jamaican Olympic Trials, in June 2021, McLeod lowered her personal best time for a sixth time in a year, running 49.91 seconds in the 400 metres to finish second behind Stephenie Ann McPherson. This secured McLeod's slot on the Jamaican team for the delayed 2020 Summer Games. Naomi Van Den Broeck (born 3 January 1996) is a Belgian sprinter. She represented Belgium at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo 2021, competing in women's 4 × 400 metres relay. The women's 400 metres hurdles event at the 2020 Summer Olympics took place between 31 July and 4 August 2021 at the Japan National Stadium. 39 athletes from 25 nations competed. At the U.S. Olympic trials in June 2021, Sydney McLaughlin became the first woman to run the event in under 52 seconds, improving Dalilah Muhammad's world record of 52.16 secs to 51.90. In Tokyo, both women ran inside the world record, with McLaughlin winning the gold medal with a new world record time of 51.46, while 2016 Olympic champion Muhammad ran 51.58 for the silver medal.
