Rosalie Joyce Hixson (November 19, 1944 – February 3, 2006), later Rosalie Wiherin, was an American wheelchair athlete. She earned medals at the 1964, 1968, 1972, and 1976 Paralympic Games. Early life Rosalie Joyce Hixson was born in Crystal Spring, Pennsylvania, the daughter of Guy Newton Hixson and Junia May Duvall Hixson. Her family ran a farm, and she was on the track team in high school. She became paralyzed as a teenager, in 1959, from polio. She trained as an athlete at the Hiram G. Andrews Rehabilitation Center in Johnstown, Pennsylvania. She graduated from Southern Fulton High School in 1962, and attended Elizabethtown College. Career Hixson earned eight gold medals, four silver medals, and six bronze medals across four summer Paralympic Games, from 1964 to 1976. Elaine Annette Schreiber (4 June 1939 – 11 June 2017) was an Australian Paralympic table tennis player and field games athlete. She contracted Poliomyelitis as a child. Schreiber, who lived most of her life in Armadale Victoria, was a typist / telephonist employed by the St Kilda City Council, St Kilda Victoria. She worked in the Town Clerk's department for 17 years prior to the 1964 Summer Paralympics. Australian athletes at these games included quadriplegic Allan McLucas, the first quadriplegic to compete at International Paralympic Games. Schreiber, a member of the Paraplegic and Quadriplegic Association of Victoria, assisted with the fundraising to build a new hostel for quadriplegics to provide better living conditions and care under organised supervision. Christa Welger
Christa Zander Welger (June 1939 – May 30, 2019) was a German-born wheelchair athlete. She represented West Germany and later the United States in various international events. Early life Christa Zander was raised in Berlin during World War II, and then in West Berlin after the city was partitioned. She was paralyzed by polio at a young age, and developed physical strength in sports, including swimming and field events. Career As a young woman, Zander belonged to the Handicapped Sports League of Berlin, and worked in a factory. She represented West Germany at the 1958 and 1959 Stoke Mandeville Games. She won eight medals at the 1960 Summer Paralympic Games in Rome. Caz Walton Order of the British Empire, OBE (born Carol Bryant; 1 February 1947) is a British retired wheelchair athlete and former Great Britain at the Paralympics, Great Britain Paralympic team manager. She was a multi-disciplinary gold medallist who competed in numerous Paralympic Games. Between 1964 and 1976 she won medals in athletics, swimming, table tennis, and fencing. She took a break from the Paralympics, entering the basketball and fencing competitions in 1988. In total Walton won ten gold medals during her Paralympic career, making her one of the most successful British athletes of all time.
